I had a similar problem with the Age of Empires demo. Post your specs and it might be easier to narrow down. My problem was having FSAA4 on permanent on an ATI card.

Try updating ur drivers dude and run some kinda win diagnostic tool
I always do that when I have a problem - check windows to see if its fucked, check my hard disk, run complete adware/virus scans, clean out all types of temp files, then run windoc again just to make sure nothing else is fucked - then i start trying to figure out what the problem is...sounds like a windows or video card program, do u get ta msg "windows has recovered from a serious error"? when u reboot or something? and it gives u some sysxml.data error or something like that if u ask for technical information about it the error recovery??
if so
Get Norton Systemworks 05 and run windoctor,,,betcha u have hundreds of problems (if u never ran it before - when I put Norton SysWorks on my bro's comp and ran it, he had over 1000 problems...not major, just little invalid reg keys, shortcuts, active x controls...but all those little problems fuck ur computer up in weird ways and at the worst time).
