Quote:
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Oscar-winning producer Jon Landau offered a behind-the-scenes look at some of the early tests toward making James Cameron’s Avatar sequels on Tuesday night at the Autodesk Users Group event during CG confab Siggraph.

He noted that through Lightstorm’s relationship with Autodesk and Weta (which was the lead VFX house on Avatar), the partners are working to advance virtual production tools and techniques. He added that what he was showing was work in progress as they are "still not there."

He started by taking the attendees back to Pandora, showing the quality level of the work that Cameron viewed to make decisions on the original film.

He then showed a series of clips, starting with a live capture created on a stage last November, which was set on Pandora and featured a human as well as the Na'vi. "This was our first foray into what we wanted to do," Landau told the audience, pointing to noticeable improvements in aspects of the image including lighting and shadows.

The next examples came out of Autodesk’s virtual production software Motion Builder, and again showed a notable advancement in quality. "Ultimately our goal is to get to this on stage [for live capture]," he said. "This is gong to allow Jim to light the scenes and make the process more efficient ... and focus on what is most important—the close up. Movies about storytelling."

Landau added that these advancements are "a great thing for young filmmakers. We are about preserving the filmmaking experience ... I think the future is very bright for Autodesk and for filmmakers."

Yes, Avatar was very enjoyable. Between blockbusters it might haven't been the most thought provoking (The Matrix) or a masterpiece of art in film form (The Lord of the Rings) or with fantastically well crafted dramatic undertones (The Dark Knight) but it's still among the best since it's infinitely more interesting than Tranformers, GI Joe, etc.

Truly the Star Wars of 2009 in terms of what it set to accomplish, how successful it was with audiences and how much it influenced filmmakers.

I am very interested in its sequels.

If they add an original story this time Cool Face, it could end up being decent. The first one was a very overrated movie, that goes without saying, but I didn't dislike it for what it was, a popcorny family-approved flick with visual awesomesauce... so why not.

I'll judge it once I'll have the HDrip Razz

We all thought Cameron would write Avatar 2's script himself but he hired Josh Friedman to help him: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/james-cameron-brings-writer-josh-597234

Friedman co-wrote the "War of the Worlds" script (good movie), wrote "The Black Dahlia" (haven't seen it), and ironically was also a writer on the "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" TV show (bad writing, the powers to be had no idea where to take the story).

So yeah.. http://variety.com/2013/film/news/avatar-to-get-three-sequels-foxcameron-hire-screenwriters-1200570515/

Quote:
20th Century Fox and director James Cameron announced today that the “Avatar” sequels have grown in number from two to three.

Cameron has hired screenwriters Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages, Salinger) to collaborate with him on the screenplays for “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” and “Avatar 4.”

The three tentpoles will be filmed simultaneously with production beginning next year. The release of the first sequel will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later.

3 and 4 ? First avatar only sold so much because Cameron made first "good" 3D movie. Story itself was medicore at best. I'm fairly sure most people went to see it for its 3D effects. I hope this time story is better, because i can't see how this will be popular if its just another 3D movie, not sure how much you can improve 3D effect. Avatar had that first-good-3d effect going for it. In 2D it was just meh imo.

Avatar = visual spectacle with crappy characters and a crap plot.

Cameron lost it many years ago.

Making 3 movies out of a one movie effort is the new way to make 2 times the amount of money for a smaller investment.

Audience is stupid enough to suck it up Wink

Avatar is the film most people have ever watched in the theaters. It did on the box office ~ $2.8 billions.

Based on that number, the sequel will make at the very least $1 billion. And I'm being conservative. It's "mathematically" impossible that people will massively ignore the sequel to Avatar.

Avatar 3 and 4, who knows? Could go either way but Avatar 2's profits alone would mean parts 3 and 4 can make eg $400-500 million and as a whole the sequel will still be very much profitable.

Here is a random hypothetical conservative break down:

Avatar 2-4 production budget: 200x3=$600 millions.
Promotional budget: $600 millions.

Avatar 2 Box Office: $1.5 billions.
Avatar 3 Box Office: $0.8 billion.
Avatar 4 Box Office: $0.6 billion.

Box Office - Budget = $1.7 billion profit. Neat.

I agree, spectacular entertainment. Just keep this series away from any awards talking unless it's for the technical department.

For sure, its hard to believe this is the same guy behind Terminator 1 & 2 , Aliens and even the Abyss. Pure hollow garbage is all Avatar is.

This.

He claimed he had some ideas about where to take the story next when he wrote Avatar's script, he has been working on the sequels' scripts since 2009 and now he hired new writers to actually adapt his ideas into script form.

Meaning the scripts shouldn't be rushed if they have been in development for so many years. And if one was disappointed with Cameron's writing, well he's not writing them himself this time.

Really? Avatar was undoubtedly a Cameron film in my eyes. The military/company was stereotypically evil/stupid like in Aliens and much of the dialogue was along the lines of the "game over man!" lines of that film, the film had a anti-technology vibe like in the two Terminators, also a as humans we always fuck up and we are stupid enough to self destruct ourselves and our planet vibe (found in many of his films, but mostly The Abyss), the action wasn't "modern" shitty shaky cam fast montage crap but nice easy to follow shots like his ultimate blockbuster; Terminator 2, the love story was of the Titanic variety (people from different "classes" fall in love)..

It felt very much of a Cameron film to me and while not being among his best, it wasn't eg worse than True Lies, which is an incredibly fun film.
