Quote:
Emmerich told Digital Spy: "We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot... and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts. Pretty soon we'll have to look for a writer and start."

Plans to reunite stars Kurt Russell and James Spader for a sequel to Stargate, which spawned three television spinoff shows, have been scuppered by time according to Emmerich.

"The actors look totally different... it would not work," he stated.

great, stain the legacy of the tv show and do a reboot Rolling Eyes
best use only hip young actors from different cultural backgrounds, below 25 if possible and replace all the hard sci-fi and tech talk with pew-pew-pew and we got us a box office hit
oh, and let JJ Abrams be the writer

the series is a direct continuation of the movies
but don't worry, whatever comes out of this probably won't have anything in common with either the original movie or the tv show

Yes but if they reboot the movie, then they can take it in a completely different direction, different characters, mythology... Make something really different and worthwhile... Not sure why people here are talking about the show - I see nothing that says they're doing anything related to it, and - as I already said, I think it would be a stupid waste to continue along the shows lines.

Then they could just as well just make something new entirely instead of taking a huge stinking pile of shit on what we know and love of Stargate.

And how did you arrive to that conclusion?

He is the co-producer, co-writer, director of the movie you "know and love". Laughing

Because you are already dismissing a film based on NO information other than the fact it's being done by the same person who was primarIly responsible for the original film you profess to love.

Whilst the movie is not bad, its not exactly great either (yeah I know, boooo hisss) its nowt special.

The TV show on the other hand was great fun for the majority of its run and had some fantastic plot lines.

Had it been the people who were involved with the TV series then I would be more excited, this will just be generic pew pew pew shoot ze evil aliens crap.

It's just too soon. SG-1 ended 6 years ago, those faces are still way too fresh in people's memories.

I'm talking about the series. Not overly fond of the movie. The old one that is.

Well I think the entire point a reboot should exist is TO do something new with it...that's WHY it's a reboot, not a remake... Otherwise whats the point, why would you want to see the same damn thing again. A reboots purpose should be to take the same original premise, and experiment with it, try taking it in a new direction, tell a different story within the originals framework, otherwise it's pretty pointless. I really hope the ignore the tv series... It's been done, why would you want to see unfamiliar actors in the same old roles doing the same shit you've already seen?

As imperfect, and inferior as the total recall reboot was, I atleast applaud it as a reboot for doing exactly that.

I hope this reboot is approached in the same way.

But that's the thing, Emmerich wants to reboot his own movie with a new movie (that he hopes will be the first in a trilogy).

He isn't rebooting the series, with a new series.

It is my understanding there is a reason he was asked if Kurt Russell and James Spader would return instead of their TV actor counterparts that had been playing the characters for a 10+ years; because he ain't touching what he didn't work on.

Afaik Emmerich was not very fond of the TV show, all that exists for him lore-wise will probably be his own movie. No wonder he didn't even reference the show. (yet the rights he got from MGM contain the complete Stargate franchise)

From what I remember, Emmerich wanted to do more Stargate movies after the original one, but he was turned down and MGM went ahead with the TV series. The show had nothing to do with him, and yeah, I don't think he had much love for it either.. It's safe to say that his reboot won't be based on the series in any way.

I think back then he was saying that his ideas for the sequels were much less action/adventure too.

There are 5 books written based on his notes on where the franchise could have gone with more movies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_literature

Quote:
A series of five novels written by Bill McCay were published from 1996 to 1999, based on the story of the 1994 film, Stargate. Each book was also produced as a book on tape read by David Fox. These were produced by consulting the original notes made by film director Roland Emmerich, in an attempt to envision where the film "would have gone". Neither party has commented on whether McCay's interpretation was correct. The film's producer, Dean Devlin, had his own ideas, but he did not bring them to light until interviewed much later, after the publication of all the novels. The subsequent television series Stargate SG-1 was an entirely independent development, making no attempt to reconcile with the plot line of the books. This marked the first major branching of the franchise.
