HDMI 2.0 officially announced: 18Gbps bandwidth, 60fps 4K, 32 channel audio

Quote:
Only just after it leaked out, the folks at HDMI Licensing are announcing HDMI 2.0 officially. Arriving just in time for the wide rollout of a new generation of Ultra HDTVs, it adds a few key capabilities to the connection standard. With a bandwidth capacity of up to 18Gbps, it has enough room to carry 3,840 x 2,160 resolution video at up to 60fps. It also has support for up to 32 audio channels, "dynamic auto lipsync" and additional CEC extensions.

The connector itself is unchanged, which is good for backwards compatibility but may disappoint anyone hoping for something sturdier to support all of those suddenly-popular dongles. The cables won't change either, as the group claims current high-speed Category 2 wires can handle the increased bandwidth. Some companies have suggested upgrade paths for their UHDTVs already on the market -- hopefully we'll find out more about those plans this week at IFA 2013.

What? They are not going to milk money from those fracking cables again?

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Nice, more high-resolution displays that can do 60 instead of 30. Smile
(Yeah I don't know much about these things, eventually though we'll have quality TV's and monitors capable of 120Hz or higher at a decent resolution...)

I'm sure the manufacturers will release HDMI2.0 cables, needed or not.

you can already have 60fps @ 4k resolution with double displayport connection, the downside is of course the price of display devices

haha yea, my uncle bought one of them for HDMI and called me to hook it up (shows how clueless he was when he needs me to drive over and plug in 2 ends of a HDMI into the only spots they fit).

Asked him what he paid, he spent $99 on a gold plated end, fiber wrapped to stop 'interference', extra rugged HDMI cable.

A tip to everyone here: NEVER EVER say or show you're good with computers to ANYONE in your family. NEVER. Because the moment they know you know how to use Chrome/Firefox to seach google for problems, they stop trying to do it themselves. I hate it.

Kinda hard to do for me, My job is application engineer. So friends/family hears it and goes "we now know who to call when we get one of those obscure windows errors, or I want to know how to burn MP3s to a CD, and where to find the MP3's to start with"

The answer to "how can I download YouTube songs" is - You don't. You go find them from a proper source.

http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/hdmi_licensing_llc_defines_certification_for_4k_compatible_hdmi_cables.html

Quote:

Hdmi Licensing LLC has created a certification for hdmi-cables to be capable of videosignals with a 2160p-resolution or 4k. The decision was made after testing several cables.

This program encompasses additional and enhanced HDMI cable testing as well as a comprehensive anti-counterfeiting label program. This empowers participating HDMI Adopters to design and test their High Speed HDMI Cables for ultra-reliability and high performance typically needed for emerging 4K/UltraHD content.

“With rapid growth of feature-rich, 4K/UltraHD content, it’s critical that all components in a 4K/UltraHD HDMI-connected system are fully capable of delivering on the experience. That is why we are launching this proactive program to give consumers absolute peace-of-mind,” said Jeff Park, HDMI Licensing, LLC’s Technology Evangelist.

The Program includes a best-practices design note and an expanded set of cable testing requirements. Under this program, Participants will test their HDMI cables at an HDMI Authorized Testing Center (ATC) to certify that their HDMI cables can reliably support the full 18Gbps bandwidth of the HDMI 2.0 Specification, which is what is typically needed for the most advanced video formats such as 4K/UltraHD, a wide color gamut, and High Dynamic Range (HDR). The Program also incorporates new testing guidelines for EMI levels to minimize unwanted interference with wireless signals in today’s connected devices. Once the cables have passed the testing requirements at an HDMI Authorized Testing Center (ATC) and are registered with HDMI Licensing, LLC, Participants can brand and promote their cables as Premium High Speed HDMI Cables or Premium High Speed HDMI Cables with Ethernet.

These cables will carry a tamper-proof, anti-counterfeit label to differentiate them from other HDMI cables. A mobile app that scans the label will allow manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to confirm the authenticity of Premium High Speed HDMI Cables.

“As they upgrade their equipment, consumers expect to fully enjoy the 4K/UltraHD features that the HDMI Specification enables. Consumers can easily identify Premium High Speed HDMI Cables and be confident that their new 4K/UltraHD TVs, sources and cables will deliver an ultra-reliable, 4K/UltraHD experience,” states Rob Tobias, President of HDMI Licensing, LLC.

The Premium HDMI Cable Certification Program is currently available to HDMI Adopters via the HDMI Adopter extranet, and participating HDMI ATCs are ready to accept cables for testing.

To date I have yet to find even a single HDMI cable not capable of transporting 4K with even rather lenghty cables. Of course certification drives up prices and we are certain that Hdmi Licensing LLC will love to take a few coins from the licensing process as the Hdmi Authorized Testing Centers are owned by Hdmi Licensing LLC.

Update 05-01-2017:
HDMI 2.1 overview page has gone up, here, including a QA section. Some of the highlights.

Q: What are the support resolutions and frame rates ?

4K50/60
4K100/120
5K100/120
8K50/60
8K100/120
10K50/60
10K100/120

Q: What colorimetry is supported?
A: HDMI 2.1 Specification supports the latest color spaces including BT.2020 with 10, 12, and 16 bits per color component.

Q: Will this work with 8K@60 or 4K@120Hz?
A: Yes if those features are implemented along with Higher Video Resolution. That will require the new 48G cable

Q: Is this primarily for consoles or will PCs utilize this also?
A: It can be used for both.

Q: Will this result in more gaming PCs connecting to HDMI displays, either monitors or TVs?
A: The intent of the feature is to enable HDMI technology to be used in these applications. Given that HDMI connectivity already has a strong presence in this area, we expect that use of HDMI technology in gaming will continue to grow.

Original post:
The new HDMI2.1 specification has just been announced and it contains some really good improvements over HDMI 2.0

Higher Video Resolutions support a range of higher resolutions and faster refresh rates including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz for immersive viewing and smooth fast-action detail.
Dynamic HDR ensures every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider color gamuts-on a scene-by-scene or even a frame-by-frame basis.
48G cables enable up to 48Gbps bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 feature support including 8K video with HDR. The cable is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI Specification and can be used with existing HDMI devices.
eARC supports the most advanced audio formats such as object-based audio, and enables advanced audio signal control capabilities including device auto-detect.
Game Mode VRR features variable refresh rate, which enables a 3D graphics processor to display the image at the moment it is rendered for more fluid and better detailed gameplay, and for reducing or eliminating lag, stutter, and frame tearing.

The new specification will be available to all HDMI 2.0 Adopters and they will be notified when it is released early in Q2 2017.

Should probably include this information in the OP to avoid confusion.

Tobias adds, "How an individual piece of equipment will meet the 2.1 standard will depend on the manufacturer and the features. Some manufacturers may be able to achieve 2.1 compliance with just a firmware upgrade; others will require new hardware," he says.
