Anyone who is currently using a KMS-activated Windows 8 Enterprise, do not download a version yet. New KMSv6 has not leaked.

The 8.1 Pro RTM seems pretty good so far. I had some issues running the public preview so I had went back to 8. I do hope that they make it so we can use our 8 keys on the actual release iso if it ends up being any different than this RTM (which is doubtful). I do not like the idea of having to download 8.1 or other major updates from the App store, they should let everyone download the iso of 8.1 if they want and use their 8 keys to activate.

Isn't that how it's activated?

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/47477-Windows-8-1-Activation-%28Current-known-Methods%29

Basically you use the known (But blocked for activation.) key to install and then use slmgr to change the key to your own legit Windows 8 key and then you activate with that. Smile
(Guide is a bit more in depth on how to use phone activation if it doesn't work but it shouldn't be needed.)

EDIT: Or wait (The OS has a nag screen though.) until a working method like using KMS (WinToolkit for example.) is devised to bypass or fool the activation mechanic.
(This being KMS6 means it could take a while for that to happen.)

I activated my Win 8.1 ProWMC using phone activation and two keys (one for Pro and one for WMC afterwards) using phone activation. So you dont really need your own retail key, any non-blocked key will do.

I already activated mine with my real key, I just hope that if they do end up changing anything in the Oct 17 release that they would allow us to use our real keys to start and not have to jump through those extra hoops during the installation. I am not going to bother using my Media Center key though as I had trouble on my HTPC where I could not reactivate it when something got changed with regular Windows 8 Pro and I was forced to do a reinstall so I rather avoid those headaches in 8.1 for something I never used.

I doubt anything will change, this is the final build sent to be pressed to disc and sold to OEM and retail isn't it, possibly the downloadable Store version will be a bit updated but the OS itself is complete.

And as usual the OS will be updated via the Microsoft Windows updates, there's two already leaked. Smile
(Most of these early leaked updates get superseded quickly, unsure when Microsoft Update will start listing fixes but it'll probably be shortly after the OS is out to the public, maybe the usual monthly patch Tuesday, November if so.)

Can you download the RTM release and use it to upgrade your legal Windows 8.0 PRO to 8.1 Pro ? Will the upgrade erase or change your settings & apps ?

Legal Pro key can be used to activate 8.1.

If one has a 8 Enterprise, it is impossible to install anything but Enterprise on top of it, and there is currently no way to activate other than silly frankenbuilds. Just wait.

You may need to redownload the apps again but they have always said that might be the case. I did a clean install and had it save nothing when I did the upgrade to the 8.1 Pro RTM so it put all my old files in a Windows.old folder.

Making the Documents folder sync with SkyDrive by default seems rather stupid. That folder is almost 20GB large in my case... I would sure as hell hope this "feature" can be disabled Very Happy

That must be something you have to enable as I just looked at my Skydrive and do not see any of My Documents folders in there and I have had my computer on all day since installing 8.1 so if it did it automatically I think I would see some of my stuff in there by now.

Well that's good to know. Although the official feature list says:
Quote:
SkyDrive is now the default location for saving documents. So you always have your files wherever you go, even when youโ€™re offline. And with the included SkyDrive app, you can manage both local files and SkyDrive files in one place.

So I guess that's something to watch out for...

Can you tell me if the desktop application shortcuts can still be pinned to the start screen like tiles? One preview seems to mention they are all stuck in the "All apps" section. I find it strange MS would actually limit functionality like that, if that's true...

Also not sure I like that new search of theirs, but at least it looks that it can be disabled and tweaked Smile

You get a choice when you start the OS for the first time, I turned it off since I prefer a local account and files though some settings are synched to my LIVE profile or what to call that.

Yeah prolly has to do with a live account as user account, rather then a offline (which anyone that is smart would do).

I don't mind the Live account... the only inconvenience I spotted so far is that it forces you to use your profile name as the user name.

Installing 8.1 RTM (without Cool from a fresh formatting will finally let you become the OS's Admin after disabling UAC a la Windows 7 Style...or will you have to do work arounds to be able to edit, for example, the Hosts file (for ol' fashioned Photoshop cracking) without the need to go through the start menu to open Notepad as an Admin? Oo;..

Because i don't wanna have a 2nd,admin account for that kind of stuff (i prefer my PC to boot directly to desktop without waiting me to click shit)

Also, any other noticeable changes for those who tested 8.1 RTM?

Admin approval mode is still active unless you disable it in the policies though I don't know if it's still as restrictive.
(Smart Screen and UAC are also mostly unchanged from what I know, they are quite useful though.)

I think I'll install 8.1 when it officially launches on October 18th as an update through WU or their store (I thought I'd read somewhere MS'd be offering the update via their App store). I hope there won't be any issues with it and an KMS-activated W8 Enterprise.

There will be issues. 8.1 Enterprise uses a different KMS method and will not install on the key you have. I don't think there will be a Windows Store update path for Enterprise.

I thought MS would be offering the 8.1 update to all Windows 8 OS's regardless of the edition used? Like in the case of Service Packs being available throughout all ranges of different editions of past versions of Windows.

Yes, but this is not treated as a service pack. And there seems to be an overhaul in the way key management is done on Server 2012 R2 and 8.1.

The + version seems compatible should you want to use it.

And this was updated on Majorgeeks yesterday but I don't think I've heard of it before.

(Though I've only really heard of the two most popular so that doesn't say much.)
