http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1531901/

Byzantium is a 2013 British-Irish fantasy thriller film directed by Neil Jordan ( Interview with the Vampire, The Company of Wolves , The Crying Game) and starring Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton and Jonny Lee Miller.

Quote:
A vampire mother and daughter's dark two-hundred-year history threatens to catch up with them in a run-down hotel on the English coast. Their story begins during the Napoleonic Wars, when young Eleanor (Ronan) was abandoned as Clara (Arterton) was forced into prostitution. Two centuries later, contemplative Eleanor and extroverted Clara are on the run when they seek sanctuary in a dilapidated coastal resort. There, Clara sets her sights on a lonely soul named Noel (Daniel Mays) who has just inherited the Byzantium Hotel, a once-thriving inn that has fallen into a sad state of disrepair. Before long, the elder vampire has transformed the Byzantium into a makeshift brothel where she and her daughter can quench their thirst for human blood while maintaining a low-profile. Meanwhile, Eleanor falls for Frank (Caleb Landry Jones), a hapless yet charming young waiter who unwittingly draws out the natural storyteller in her. Amidst a string of mysterious disappearances in the sleepy coastal town, Frank realizes that Eleanor's extraordinary tales are much more than dark fantasy. As Clara and Eleanor's sanguinary past slowly comes into focus, it's only a matter of time until the two women will be forced to flee once again, or remain to face their fates.

If you are a connoisseur of such fine examples of vampire genre as Interview With The Vampire, Coppola's Dracula, The Addiction, The Hunger, Let The Right One In and would gladly hatefuck Twilight and it's clones with a baton, then I have all reasons to believe you will find this new movie of interest.

PS WEB-DL 1080p release is already available as of today Cool

yeah , I know Wink

Almost all WEB-DL movie releases, both 720 and 1080p are encoded this way, but I have to say when bdrip is nowhere to be found, it is better than nothing at all and it still looks decent on my 24', generally just a bit blurry, but at least in my experience no visible blocks

I wonder... are they from itunes?

They should work on some of the other vampire chronicles.

Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned (yeah the book) and memnoch are all good books.

I didnt expect to enjoy them (not really my type of thing) but they are all worthy of being made into films, or maybe an extended TV series (ala True Blood and the like) would be better.

Hmm.. Yeah red is not so good but I must be blind lol it is not as blurry as I was afraid it would be on my 24' based on your scary description Very Happy It does look pretty good to me, I dunno. certainly not bluray quality but I dont see how it could be upscaled dvd.
Anyways, it will do till October when afaik, it is released on bluray.

Saner,

That would be nice. Btw I really liked The Tale of the Body Thief,I guess it would have made a nice movie. Though later on Ann Rice went batshit crazy and turned to religion ,found Christ and all Very Happy and it shows in the books. On the other hand afaik she has realized the errors of her ways Laughing and is back now to murdering vampire ways rofl

I liked Body Thief for what it was, but I didnt think it was her best Very Happy

I dont think I have read any others (apart from those mentioned) as I said its not really my genre, I just liked the first (didnt everyone really Very Happy) and couldnt just read Vampire Lestat after the way it ended (IIRC it was a few years ago)

I may have read The Vampire Armand, but I am not sure, the synopsis on Wikipedia makes me think I didnt, but half of me is saying 'dont be a moron, you read it when you read the others'

Ah, that explains it Wink

I guess the community should pressure Apple(itunes) then demanding they release properly encoded movies. After all, they are not free. Cool

PS Just out of curiosity.. How do DVD movies look on ur 42' ? I'm afraid to ask about DVDrip's though lol It is just that I have lots of movies only available on DVD's and I want to encode them to x264 but I'm not sure whether I should stick to "transparent" crf16 or manually specify super high bitrate so that they won't look extremely awful on a large screen

My review from other thread:

Quote:
Byzantium

OH! MY! GOD! Neil Jordan directed new vampire movie. Genre reinvented! Ressurected!! Saved!!!

Except it's not. It's based on some dry hump vampire fantasy play for teenagers. The movie is boring, neurotic, overblown with almost nonexistant story. The characters are - yes you guessed it - boring and neurotic with almost no exposition.
There are two female vampires, well they drink blood and are immortal but survive light quite well and doesn't have fangs but some growing artificial nail for breaking the skin.

There is really nothing going on for first hour and a half so you can safely skip that part of the movie. In short the two femvamps are on the run, the young one drinks blood from old dying people the older one drinks whoever she wants, they stay in a hotel called Byzantium which the old one turns into whore house. The young ones fancies a anemic guy in the mean time.

First 90 minutes you want to poke your eyes out with a tea spoon.
90-95 - exposition, the only interesting part of the movie
95-115 - more bullshit with the bullshittiest ending in a long time

2/10. Two points, one for each of Gemma's boobs.

Oh! And that mini review was spoiler free. It's hard to spoil anything for a movie that's 2 hours long with 10 minutes worth of plot.

original DVDs look OK , well they look great when played on ps3 that has its own upscaler that also adds edge sharpness and macro block depeckle , on PC they look ugghhh even when you use VLC or MPC-HC ... pc upscaler just blurs the picture and when you add sharpness its , shit in the woods... must test how ps3 converts picture to make it so my pc does the same , but as of now any move i have goes though PS3

dvd rips on PC ... Laughing okish blur ... dvd rips on ps3 , superb , its upscaler can do wonders ... but when movies are with CINAVA sound Cp , ps3 will not play them so back to pc we go ... but as of now i try to get the best version possible and play it with SVP on my pc to have that 60fps look

I see=)
have you tried watching dvd\dvdrips on PC with total media theatre? they have a feature called simhd?

I've watched it today finally and although it is not without shortcomings ,and Interview with the vampire is still better that Byzantium, yet it still easily trumps most if not all modern vampire stuff released on tv\video, imho but i believe this film could have been so much more.

God I love Saoirse Ronan's acting Smile
Wonder how she'll do in different roles.
Already knew I was going to like this movie beforehand and it didn't disappoint.
