It's amazing and it's free.
There are people who complain about the *grind* of progressing through the ranks later on, and you can speed it up by spending money of course, but it's just a great game overall no matter which route you take.
Doesnt matter if you're not into flight sims because with mouse aim anyone can play and have lots of fun.
I've put about 90 hours into it since I first came across this game a few months ago.
I actually hadn't heard of it before finding screenshots of it in this very thread and thinking to myself... 'Damn this look really good!'
Give it a shot and you'll probably be hooked pretty quickly. Much easier to get into than something like World of Tanks.

Granted I'm not much for flight sims, what is this game like? | Pretty much what Surray said.
Since it's free, just download it and give it a go. And with mouse+kb it's the most accessible flight-game available.
And again, as Surray said, some people find the game grindy, but they go about it the wrong way. Those guys just play to unlock the planes, but once you reach level 6-7-ish in the nations, you are pretty much at the level where the game is most enjoyable. At that point you have a great selection of planes. Right now this is my level with the available nations and the amount of different planes that I have with them:
USA - Level 8 - 22 planes
Germany - Level 6 - 19 planes
USSR - Level 7 - 24 planes
Britain - Level 8 - 16 planes
Japan - Level 6 - 16 planes
And I don't even have every one of them unlocked for those levels, I miss about 2-4 for each nation.
The actual grindy stuff only kicks in around level 8-ish, but as I said, by that time you already have pretty much everything you need to have a great time.
If you go in to unlock everything, you won't have fun, if you go in to enjoy shooting down enemies, can't find a better one right now.
Also, having Jeremy Soule composing the war-timey-orchestra soundtrack helps a lot. Oh...and as you can see, it's gorgeous. Just search this thread for 'thunder' to see more. :shamelessplug:

According to the achievements (Hi SAM!) there's some really interesting things to discover on the planets surface (Or the three available areas of it that apparently will be available when the game is released, much like the island system in ArmA.) though I don't know if anything like that is actually part of the current early-access alpha (beta?) yet.
