Just talked to some people who deal with mac shit...
my mid 2010 macbook has run its course. They'll trade it in for a newer retina model if i throw in some dough as well \o/
Aww yiss. Stupid kernel_task... motha fucka has been fucking my disk drive like there's no tomorrow. Need to finish this music video... then back up... then trade it in. Oh yes. YES. WONDERFUL YES.

Get the 13". The 15" is fucking huge. Install OS X Mavericks there to have a really smooth OS.  |

17 is too big for me to carry around. and they don't have 17s around. even apple store doesn't have 17s.
Trade in value for my 3 year old doohickey is 850.
so w/o it'll be 2700. w/ tax 3024.
but thats a nifty machine right there.
might fix it, and try to go back to older osx 
and still get this one, and use this macbook as a compressor on the side \o/

I don't know how much Mavericks improves things, but the HD4000 can't handle the resolution on the 13" MBPr at all under ML, it lags like shit. On the 15" one you at least have the GT650m which, if you tweak it correctly to *not* switch to Intel HD while on power, can handle it fine. By default those lag like shit as well though; the second your graphically intensive shit stops, it switches to the iGPU and switching back to the discrete one takes too long so it becomes noticeable when you do something again. Anyone claiming otherwise either always has something running that keeps the dGPU active or is lying through their teeth. I've not seen a single one *not* lag.

The issue is the the GPU. It's the software. It lags just as bad on the 15.
Mavericks improves things a lot.

I know it's the software. It's OS X switching down to the iGPU too quickly and not quick enough to the dGPU. Hence why I said I don't know how much Mavericks improves it. Under ML at least you're better off with non-retina, performs much better. |

It's the software why the 4000 is not enough, it's not or wasn't very well HW accelerated. It's still not perfect, but it's much better.

I've worked on ppls MacBooks. The fucked up thing is when they run Windows instead of OSX... Talk about throwing your money away...

Uh huh, 'throwing money away', I guess there's an alternative then, so I guess you can show us all a Windows laptop that...
- Has the same sort of responsive touchpad
- Has 2-3 hours battery life while gaming
- Has 5-6 hours battery life while working
- Is small and as light
- Can run both Windows + OSX (both needed)
- Has a screen that's just as good and bright
- Has the same resolution (1440x900) for a 13" model
