Because it isn't selling very well and I would guess there will be a point in time where it would be more profitable to give the game away for free, to get more players, and make money from selling items in the online shop.

Item shop is fine. You can buy tier 4 lockboxes using in game resources or spend $5. Also you can either spend $$$ or resources to buy Dodge Challenger RT Hemi Orange, I think that's best car.
I am fine with that kind of shop that lets me purchase best items with in game resources even tho it will take little longer.
Plus quest rewards are nice, I am around 550 Ego Rating and still using Nolan Rifle, which is amazing and still come 3-5 on damage during larger arkfalls. But for some reason I cannot remove mods from that rifle and not sure why.

hm, sorry tu burst your bubble, but the game sold extremely well. Stop making assumptions, thank you ...
It sold over 300'000 units on day 1 alone. And it was/is in the top 10 selling items on steam, gmg etc. for some time.
The game sold and sales just fine.
Oh and trion said there are now over a million registered users for defiance (and that was back in may, before the game came to steam).

Game is a decent enough shooter with loot/progression - but it suffers heavily from a lack of variety and meaty content.
Yet another case of releasing a barebones engine without longevity.

well, an mmo is never released "complete". It all depends, on how fast they can bring new content, so players won't hit a wall (or not for too long).

Well season 2 starts June 2014 so that's a long time to wait, if true. Ten is a reasonable price. I'm not too familiar with the game but it sort of looks like Rift With Guns (tm).

I find it fun enough, it is pretty brainless though and feels empty.
the Arkfall's and volge siege's are fun though.
For what I paid (£3.50) I dont feel ripped off, had I paid whatever the launch price was I may have felt different :Y
I am considering getting the expansion in a week or so if I am still playing it.

Please, don't buy DLC. It's complete fucking worthless. You get maybe 30 minute of gameplay from it.

it's a bit of a stretch. The game was 10$ almost since release, with no monthly fees.
If that was "too much to pay" as a reason, then there is no way you'll like it f2p rofl.
i mean you'll have to be mighty cheap, as to use "10 bucks to play this game forever is too much" as an excuse rofl.
PS : game blows. well, the game isn't "half bad" i guess, for what it is. the problem for me was the tv show. That crapfest totally ruined the game for me lol.
