[2013]
Kotonoha no Niwa / The Garden of Words

Director:
Quote:
Makoto Shinkai
Known for making very beautiful scenery and extremely well animated movies (although only a few so far). He places effort into making movies more down to earth and has been compared to Hayao Miyazaki (of Ghibli, Spirited Away among many other movies).
His works from Wikipedia:
 Spoiler:

Synopsis:
Code:
The movie follows Takao, a 15 year old schoolboy who has a dream of becoming a shoemaker. I'd rather not write much more, I find the official synopsis reveals too much of the movie (so don't read it).

Releases:

[Doki]_Kotonoha_no_Niwa_(848x480_h264_BD_AAC)_[F66FA838].mkv
You really should watch it in 1080p if you can...
(That said, I don't know which 1080p is best, but I watched the Coalgirls one as I've found some of their previous releases to be better.)

My non-spoiler amateurish mini review:
Code:
As some of you may know, I watch a lot of anime. As a result of having consumed such a large amount of anime during all these years I've gotten a fairly high standard for it so I don't watch every show. I do watch every single anime movie that comes out though, since they are usually of a higher production quality. Now, Makoto Shinkai is pretty special when it comes to anime movies, he hasn't made a lot of them but the ones he has made (particularly 5 Centimeters Per Second) places a lot of effort and attention to details. And while he tried his hand at doing a "Ghibli-like" movie (Children Who Chase Lost Voices), I find he is best when he does something more down to earth, something more realistic. 5 Centimeters Per Second is such a movie, it's a realistic down to earth movie that everyone can relate to.

Now Kotonoha no Niwa is certainly down to earth and relatable. It's the kind of movie that you can watch and just relax with. While the story and characters are nothing like the "Lost in Translation" movie, the feeling you get from watching it is similar. It makes you happy and relaxed. When I started watching it I noticed it was only 46 minutes long, I thought for sure this would end up being a bad thing but it felt very well paced. There were some things that could have been expanded on a little bit but nothing really important. It was surprisingly enough with those 46 minutes!

So what's the best aspect of the movie? The animation and drawings... This is HANDS DOWN the most well animated and drawn movie I've ever seen... You can literally pause at ANY moment in the movie and it'll be a nice wallpaper. As someone who loves CG art (mostly painted) this was such a fucking eye orgasm to watch... Not only the attention to detail and how well drawn it was but the animation as well, so very alive! This is the kind of movie I'd recommend to people who haven't seen a single anime before (and who don't need action in their movies cause this one has none of that).

TLDR:
* Like Lost in Translation? You will probably like this as well.
* Most well animated and well drawn movie I've ever seen...
* 46 minutes long and that feels just about right for this movie.

Pretty gifs and images from various tumblrs of this movie (nothing spoilerish):

I've already downloaded Thora's release and will watch it soon.

5cm was a great anime for people who are not that big anime fans (me) and only watch the really special ones (it was a special one!)

Shinkai Makoto is one of my absolute favorite anime directors. Right up there with Miyazaki and Kon. I remember a time when I even downloaded 'She and her Cat' just to see his earliest works. Very Happy

The visuals are always amazing, that rocket launch in 5cm is still one of my all time favorite moments.

I see he did two movies since then, thanks for reminding me.

Saw it a few weeks ago. It's great. The visuals are outstanding too, so much stuff happening on screen at once.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I did watch alot of anime movies a few years back, but I havent been so much into them lately. Smile

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Yo, Yondaime, why don't you use the English titles of the movies since most of us are anime noobs.

"Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo" means nothing to me.
"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" ohh yeah, I've watched this and liked it enough.

I finally watched it and liked it a lot. For me it was their final exchange (you know the scene), that was almost cathartic, and made the movie "click". Great movie.

I think 5cm was even better though.

Can't believe I only got around to this now. As I said before Shinkai is among my absolute favorites. Shame on me. SHAME!

His character designes improved considerably, though to me they still were just a smigde off. He sure came a looong way since Voices of a Distant Star. Very Happy Was glad to see things working out better than 5cps' bittersweet conclusion. Still no happynesseverafter but more satisfying than watching a guy screw up his life, brooding over the love of his childhood.

Shame on you!
But you redeemed yourself, so it's ok.

Really a great movie. Incredible animation, voice acting, story... just beautiful.

Laughing

But seriously. Writing off people who enjoy a bit of tragic drama from time to time as 'emos' is pretty moronic. I enjoy Scindler's List a lot and always cry at the end. Does that make me a brooding poser who uses eyeliner and listens to whatever emos listen to? Very Happy Nope. It means I'm human. Smile
