Is this any good? It sounds pretty intriguing.

The game certainly has the typical eurojank flair one should expect from such games, especially once the monsters are introduced, but the puzzles seem decent enough.
At least the magnetism mechanic is something new.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

|
 |
Watch out for the flt release of this game as published on usenet - a.b.cd.i & a.b.g
I grabbed the isodemo on Friday night my time played it for a few minutes & forgot about it.
All day saturdaytryin to clock darksid gaming was lag lag - gettin kilt by slowness.
I noticed that the system was running hotter than it should in mid winter & late saturday night discovered a process called TimeServer.exe that I couldn't reasonably account for running flat out & using a big chunk of resources.
Sunday morning a needle in a haystack hunt (damn wasn't wasn't showin up on search) I discovered a folder named 'Time' in Program Data which contained that exe & others:
Time-svc.exe
TimeServer.exe
w9xpopen.exe
WindowsTime.exe
plus portable python scripter & library.
Aftaer much faffin round have managed to work out the little install is a bitcoin miner. These things are designed to run offa gpu n assemble blocks of bitcoin code n send em off to be turned into bitcoins then money.
I prolly wouldn't noticed cared except the damn thing destroys gaming functionality & it doesn't seem to show up as malware on any AV scanner I've tested it with.
afaik date stamps on 'Magrunner_Dark_Pulse_FLT_FAiRLIGHT_flt_madp_PC' are conclusive - that was the source of this pain in the ass.
Iit would be unsurprising to discover that this is a M.A.A.F.I.A. dirty trick.
As far as an un-nerd such as I can tell the process is kicked off at windows start by running a service called 'Time' which initiates 'Time-svc.exe' which in turn runs the python scripts.

The naming of that released already sounds a bit weird with "Magrunner_Dark_Pulse_FLT_FAiRLIGHT_flt_madp_PC" - shouldn't it be just "Magrunner_Dark_Pulse_FLT" granted I've never used Usenet so I don't know how the naming is there.
I usually unpack installers manually too but that's a bit more work though it's a extra protection should the installer have been modified in any way.
(Albeit I guess knowing the MD5 or other CRC and comparing would also work.)
Perhaps it's the same as with the torrent networks, more open "servers" allow all sorts of modified and user made content with little or no control over what's posted.
EDIT: Though I've heard these bitcoin mining trojans or what they are have become popular or more common at least, luckily it seems it wasn't too difficult for you to remove nor did it do any actual damage to the system.
(But I've read that they can at times over-tax the GPU or was it the CPU?)

I musta downloaded 100's of games off usenet over the years & this is the first I've ever had this sort of problem with.
The reason I posted was in case someone else has grabbed the same version & that it must have been disseminated other ways.
After wading thru pages of search results all clagged up with dodgy companies offering to scan my system I came across a fellow with exactly the same trojan in the same place except his was 2 weeks ago.
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1950432&mpage=1
These things love a decent gpu & anyone getting an unusual lag on a game any game -once installed the damn things seem to run 24/7 - should check out whether they've been trojaned.
AV software doesn't detect it
I guess I always thought the usual mode of insertion for these things was a trainer/cheat. Some people seem to run any exe if it promises to give 100% health and the nature of those things (memory injection) means that most AV utilities call even the clean trainers suspect, but the kids haven't used em for long time & it never occurred to me that someone would be desperate enough to upload a couple gigs just to slip a trojan up yer ass. Usenet trojans are typically much smaller bundles.
From now on I'll do as JBeckman and extract the games by hand then drop em in the directory myself.

This is definitely a good game, it's basically a Portal clone with magnets (same structure, different mechanics of course), only with more challenging puzzles, "rougher" feel overall ( not necessarily a bad thing) and a story which can be interesting despite its inner weirdness.
Worth to be tried

No, not really. In fact, I was surprised how difficulty level was so on-spot similar to Porrtal's.

I believe it's because portals are more 'familiar' to me so I need some time to assimilate the new mechanic based on magnetic fields. However, there's surely less hand-holding in the earlier levels (with different initial learning curve) if compared to Portal 2. Things will likely change later on, but I need to play more since I'm still in the first half of the game.
