Later this summer I will begin training to drive a motorcycle. But I was thinking that there might be a game out there that simulates at least the logic of MC-gear shifting. Is there such a game? If so, which?
To be completely honest fisk, I don't know of any semi/full realistic MC games out there... period. Cars, boats, planes, trains, trucks, but bikes? I haven't seen any. You can ride bikes in some racing titles, but gear shifting in those - such as MotoGP - has always felt the same as shifting in a car. You simply press a button to shift up through the gears, then shift down when you slow/take corners.
I'd definitely be interesting in a semi/full realistic bike sim, for the exact same reason; understanding shifting.
~edit~
It appears there's a motocross sim with a focus on realistic control, but I hadn't even heard of it let alone used it.
The only bike sim that ever came close for me was Polyphonic's Tourist Trophy on the ps2. Man it was hard, you have to lean change gear correctly ect... Oh how i wish they would remake this a new engine.
Not what you need but take a look, it was an amazing sim at the time.
GP Bikes is a realistic motorcycle simulator, based on a scratch built physics engine that accurately simulates motorcycle dynamics and setup options.
GP Bikes also allows to host and join online races, with an integrated matchmaking server. During events data is collected, to provide statistics for riders' comparison.
Features:
- automotive industry-standard tyre model
- dynamic track surface groove buildup
- wet track simulation and dynamic drying
- dynamic marbles generation
- tyres pickup of marbles, grass and dirt, affecting grip
- output of CSV files with telemetry data to analyze riding sessions
- a plugins interface allows external programs to receive realtime data from the simulated bike
- LAN and online racing. Dedicated server available
- advanced users can build new tracks and integrate them with the provided tools

I tried the MX-simulator, but it was too simple. It didn't punish me (stall the bike) when I failed using the clutch/throttle properly. Gonna check GP Bikes out now.
I'm surprised there's not more hardcore sims like this, especially for use in the field of MC training. I've seen some physical simulators, like Motor-Sim, but those are real bikes tied into virtual training -- not something you can just download and test on your comp.
Yeah, using the keys seems impossible. There's basically two modes, full throttle/full clutch or no throttle/no clutch ... which makes the "simulation" impossible.
Don't you have a 360 or PS3 controller? You could use the triggers and analogue sticks then. It's not perfect but it should be a whole lot easier than using digital inputs.

I do have a 360 controller, but no bluetooth receiver on my PC. I guess I'll have to order one from amazon or sth.

Fisk the 360 controller is not bluetooth compatible, you need a dedicated dongle. They are great though.
In all fairness, the shifting part is by far the easiest thing on a motorcycle. First gear is down, second is up, third is up, etc. Coming from 5, it's down, down, down, up. Not hard at all. Better grab a car and learn how to keep your distance and look forward and anticipate a lot.
Also, grab a bicycle and do some proper cornering.
So to learn how to ride a motorcycle according to you I first need to get a driver's license and then learn in a car how to keep a distance? Yeah, I suppose using that model of logic clutch/shift usage is easy. For me though, I want to learn the basics of motorcycle shifting. Handling a motorcycle and being able to control it properly is more important in the first stages of learning how to handle a car tbh, so I don't make mistakes in traffic situations like the ones you describe.
Having had many motorbikes from being 15 years old, i would say that actually getting on the bike and learning on some quite backstreets is the way to go. This is how i learnt to ride. There is no substitute for hands on experience, all these games won't teach you the physics and mechanics of riding, only real life experience will teach you that.
GP Bikes is indeed the closest thing to a motorbike that you can find on PC, it's still very work in progress and the graphics are rough as hell but the physics are excellent and miles ahead if compared to all the arcadish stuff released these days.
I would suggest you SBK 2001 and GP500 too, old gems but still entertaining and pretty accurate physics-wise

Yeah, unfortunately I do not own a motor bike, and it is illegal to do that in Sweden anyways. Once I get my MC-license I'll be able to buy and drive the bike, so even if I had one it would be kind of a moment 22.
