Need a new mouse. Needs to be comfortable and have at least three extra buttons on the side. I'll use it for both work and gaming.
I don't want a G500 as my current one broke down (I never had a mice break down before), and that seems to be the case with many of the recently produced models judging by the forums. Nor I want those cyborg mice as they are ugly and just seem too gimmicky.
My primary choice at the moment is Performance MX. Is there anything better you might suggest?
Actually Didn't know that was out and reading about it now. Apparently it has improved switches, which is what broke in mine. So hopefully this one won't have the same issue as a G500.
I love the grip texture on the G500 so I'll probably go with G500S. Good thing I asked. Thanks
My G500 is now well over 3 years old (December 2009) and it still functions perfectly fine. Only thing "wrong" with it is that some of the paint has faded, but all the buttons still work flawlessly - and I toggle the scrollwheel a *lot*. I do need to open the sucker up and clean it, the scroll wheel does have a bit of friction now.
And fuck Intelli's Sin, I've never had any Microsoft mouse last more than 6 months, talk about flimsy build quality
G400 if you would stick to Logitech, has no issues with the acceleration like the G500. G400 has a perfect sensor, very good tracking properties, no angle snapping, high class switches from omron(the switches that are triggering the clicks), appreciable lift off distance and if you dont use any unusual dpi values, you dont need any software.
I did nothing different to it than I did to my previous mice, none of which ever broke. It started breaking after 6 months of buying it, then worked decent for a few months and now its acting up again even worse than before.
Logitech has just started using cheap switches in their mice. You probably have an older G500 revision.
I just bought the logitech g9x (I think it's discontinued now) fantastic mouse, my only gripe is that the middle mouse click required you to have Hercules fingers.

I recenetly bought the func ms-3 and I have to say it's quite nice. I went from a mionix naos 5000 to this and it took me around 3-5 days before I adapted to it. But now that I have I must say it's quite nice, I still miss a bunch of logitech features such as free-scroll and scroll-tilt.
Here's a review of it.
I have to add that I bought this for 499SEK (cirka 55€) and got the func surface L mousepad with it.
Yeah that seems similar to my issue. It doesn't happen all the time, but about 60% of clicks are double-clicks. However another big symptom is that when I hold down the button it will think I'm rapidly clicking the button (i.e. it will constantly send press/release signals), which makes dragging or selecting anything impossible.
Did you have that second issue with holding down the button as well?
Don't like g9x. It has only two buttons on the side (as far as I can see based on the images) and I need at least three as I'm used to having various shortcut keys bound to them.
And regarding the free scroll...I never found it practical. In 75% of cases I slowly scrolling through code and I like the precision of a normal scroll. In other cases it's mostly this forum that I could use free scroll, but I can't get used to switching between the two modes every time I alt+tab to here.
Try SS sensei raw, based on intelli 1.1 but the mouse isnt ergonomic like the G400. The Sensei has a lasersensor that is more sensitive of dirt on your mousepad, so if you are a dirtbag, you could get in trouble with that. Otherwise the Avago 9500 sensor has a nice lift off distance, close to none anglesnipping, the mouse got omron switches and you can spam both mouse buttons without problems.
Overall you cannot do something wrong with Steelseries Sensei/Sensei Raw/Xai, Razer Deathadder, Logitech G400/M518/M510, Zowie AM/FK.
To test click on a window title bar and attempt to drag it around. If you can do that then it's fine. And if it drags it for a bit and then just stops then it's the same issue as mine.
highfe: Most of those don't seem to have 3+ extra buttons I'm looking for. I'd rather have something more ergonomic + extra buttons than better precision. I was good at FPS even with my old 500DPI mouse I can handle it

Are you looking for a gaming mouse? If not, I use Performance MX mouse at work and it's excellent. Regarding precision, hmmm? You can set scroll speed to really low and then free scroll comes into its own, especially in code.

I'm not really shedding tears about the G500s being basically a carbon copy of the G500 but with a higher quality laser and a less exciting paint job. The G500 had one annoying habit that should basically be fixed in the G500s: the switches in the mouse buttons would actually eventually wear out and begin holding inconsistently. It's my understanding this wasn't an uncommon problem, so the new switches in the G500s shouldd go a long way towards ameliorating it.
(From Anandtech review)
Honestly that paragraph has me sold on G500S. I really like G500 and it seems they recognized the only major problem with it and fixed it. I'll go with that.
I'll also give a vote to the deathadder, never had a problem with the mouse, nice and simple.
Changed to the g9x, cause I was starting to get a bit of wear on my deathadder. Really enjoying the g9x now though, the only the fly DPI change and freescroll are awesome.
I don't think I will ever have a mouse without those features now.

I agree.
I have a G9X too and the middle button is very stiff. Other than that it's a fantastic mouse for claw grippers like me. Had to replace my first one since it had the connector issues (mouse kept disconnecting and reconnecting) but Logitech support was top notch and they sent me a new one and i didn't pay a thing. Didn't have to sent my old one either and it's still work when i fuck around with the cord so i may try the homemade solution that was posted on the net to fix the problem i have.
