I thought that they'd be better quality than the reg tv rips... but they're all blocky and shit... what gives?

Probably due to the crappy bitrate on the streams themselves?

all web-dls are better than hdtv for me, cant imagine it being any other way cause they came from the same master as in
the web-dl goes from masters ( uncompressed )-> web-dl ( x264 )
the hdtv goes from master --> hdtv broascast ( mpeg2 ) ---> hdtv rip ( x264 )
so thats a bad compression and another generation on the hdtv

I have noticed more banding on the 1080p WEB-DLs, which I think is down to the low bitrates iTunes uses.
eg...
iTunes top vs Bluray bottom
That's the only problem I've encountered, though, and I haven't noticed it on the 720p releases at all.

they are better than hdtv rips, in some cases by a big margin (plenty of comparison online), but nowhere near as good as bluray like cirithungol mentioned.

banding artifacts are the worst, just have to watch the Vikings intro to know what I mean
no amount of dithering can save that
its true, web-dl dont help with this the main reason I get them is to be rid of the tv logo, advert jumps/banners and to see the full creds

Most of the time they look better than regular rips to me, but some shows are the exception to the rule I guess.

What are you viewing the web-dl's on? Every time I downloaded one, it was worse than the 720p x264 release. Usually just go with the 720p ones though so might've been unlucky too.

Good HDTV HBO rip is much much better than web-DLs. But compared to typical scene 720p HDTV encodes, the web-DLs are better.
Some iTunes web-DLs are encoded in 6-bits to conserve bitrats but retain details.

i download breaking bad / the walking dead / the americans in 1080p web-dl, and out of being impatient i download the 720p hdtv rips now and then and i can def tell that those hdtv rips are not superior. I agree webdl is nothing like a great mastered and ripped bluray rip, but webdl will always be the choice for me if bluray isnt an option.
