Right now I got a Q8200
Nvidia GTS 450
4 GB ram
The CPU and GPU aren't 10 years old, but everything else in the case is. The monitor is also 10 years old.

i had a gpu that would do that if it was too hot. i had the overclock so tight that i had to adjust it depending on ambient temps in my computer room (difference between winter and summer temps was massive). it also started doing that when the hsf got too dusty. try taking that off and cleaning it/re-apply the thermal interface. sometimes its just a few degrees between working and doing what yours is doing. chances are, yours has a foot int he grave, but if cleaning it works, then you can at least keep playing bf while you plan/execute your upgrade...

This.
I had the exact same problem with my old 4870 (same kind of fabulous artifacts even) and eventually managed to fix it by cleaning it and disabling the OC completely..it survived for a couple of days but then there was nothing to do. :S
How are your temps out of curiosity?
