NVidia has decided to turn off PhysX if an ATI card is detected though, if I use the latest version on their site :s

8.04.09 something will work for this (Up on their website.), later versions are hardware blocked without this little "mod".

http://physxinfo.com/news/942/hybrid-physx-mod-1-02-195-xx-drivers-and-win-xp-support/

Also seems 9.09.804 or what the previous version was has been replaced by 9.09.1112 for a while now.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx_9.09.1112.html
(Previously this driver was only available due to a leak from NVIDIA's dev website.)

NVApi.dll is a core NVIDIA Forceware driver file isn't it? I was under the impression you used a ATI card as the primary display driver and then a 8600 or something like that for PhysX at which point you would have had both the NVIDIA forceware and ATI catalyst drivers installed along with PhysX?

If you use a AGEIA PPU there's another patch for that method, just replace the .dll files.

Sorry if I might have complicated things a bit, what you need for it to actually run is PhysX redist 8.09.04 or what it was called and this version is not locked so it'll allow ATI/NVIDIA combinations and so on. (Any later version won't however and more recent titles use updated functionality in core redist 2.8.1 and 2.8.2 which will crash the game with this older version installed just as 9.09.1112 adds support for new stuff for CUDA via 2.8.3 while also being fully x64 compatible.)

If the game still won't run open the settings file in the game directory and change it to windowed=0 to windowed=1 or how it reads (Was a while since I did this.) and also set resolution, then press Alt-Enter after starting the game to get back in full-screen and set any other options from the menu, make sure the game is patched as this also removes the protection, fixes most known bugs and balances the game a bit while also adding that water cannon gun. (Which has the ugliest water effect in any game so far without HW accelerated PhysX, haha.)

However this bug should have been fixed in a earlier Catalyst driver. (Might even have been 8.x somewhere.)

Okey, i got it working by starting the game in Windowed mode, but dammit this game runs like crysis. The Physx have a huge impact on performance and even without the game does not run smoothly at all, bummer Sad

This early PhysX or well Ageia instead of CUDA is poorly optimized in that regard, this was one of the first games to take advantage of this (GPU accelerated PhysX I mean.) and as such it's pretty crude compared to recent advances like 3.0.1 or 2.8.4 of the PhysX SDK which even improves CPU performance a nice bit, of course it won't be playable as long as the CPU has to render the damn thing - it's kinda all particles when used via HW but 3.0 can change this since it adds new functions over what Ageia had in their SDK - but it performs a bit better at least. Smile

you guys are missing out on a hell of a game. i played it with high pyshx on a gtx 260. thats how good the game was that i dealt with lol worthy framerate everytime gun particles entered the scene Very Happy

the game is mostly slow paced anyways with sparse combat, so you dont need high fps.

+1

Yep, all I remembered was bad performance, then I just skipped it.

I haven't played the game in a year but from what I remember..:

Lower the settings a bit. The game is not a looker, the visuals do their job just fine on lower settings.

Free performance boosts:
Quote:
Play in DX10. DX9 performs worse (I have tested this extensively).
AF: off, for some odd reason it's one of the biggest performance drains (believe me).
Shadows: normal, on high it lowers performance to soften them. Who cares, they look perfectly fine on normal.

No significant performance impact:
Quote:
AA: enabled.
Textures/normal/specular maps: if you have the VRAM, set them to high, no significant performance impact.
Motion Blur & Camera Motion Blur: you'd think otherwise but I believe there's no significant impact on performance. Set according to your tastes. I believe I liked only one of the settings enabled?

These lower quality, but might be worth disabling them since they cause a huge performance impact:
Quote:
Water Reflections and Caustics, near water your framerates might lower extremely. For such areas disable them.

PhysX
Quote:
Hardware Physics: enable for nvidia. Should help or at the very least not make it worse.
Advanced Physics: enable for a good nvidia card. The game runs like shit anyway so you might as well get those effects. Stay away if your GPU is meh though.

The game will still run like crap, but hopefully more often than not it'll be ~25-30.

I'll play it in 2-3 years.
I'd like to see what the "OMGZ only 20fps and stuttering? GRAPHIC WHORES!1 lol wut" will say about the game by then.

Probably "Ewwww look at those graphics, I can't play that!" Pffchh

Not worth playing anyways IMO. It was super clunky. The only cool part of the game was the ice/water effects.

My main issue with this game was way to slow paced gameplay.

I didn't mind the slow gameplay. What was shit about it was the mediocre plot, how clunky the character control felt, and the shit performance. It was a good looking game, but not that good looking and it ran like complete anus.

When I played it on my dualcore+4870 the performance was bad, but not that terrible considering the pace of the game which is structured more like an adventure. Something like 30fps (medium details) were more than enough to enjoy it. Razz

game is like dead space only in first person and instead of space you have an icy ship . with my 275 gtx played at 30 fps with all settings on ultra . the game is one of the best physx games out there , you dont need more than 30 fps.
