Seems fake to me, but some claiming it's real..
Anyone else care to voice their opinion on it?

They are from this page btw: http://mrietze.com/web13/japan13.htm

well meta says 2 sec exposure time, shouldn't the lightning be not that sharp then anymore? Confused

Hmm the amount of light produced by lightning might be enough to get it nicely imprinted on the film with a 2 sec exposure time. Also explains the stripes.

Tbh, isn't the lightning in way too steep on an angle compared to the rest?

Well the phenomenon of lightning during volcanic eruption is real, but whether this image is fake or not, I don't know.

It is kinda too close imo, but what do I know xD

No reason for the lightning to become blurry with 2 second exposure since they don't move around.. They strike. So that picture could very well be real, but it could also be a photoshop. Impossible to tell since the phenomenon in itself is well known. Just imagine how much energy takes place during a volcanic eruption, charged particles, heat in that smoke clowd etc..

Eyjafjallajokull lightning, and they're 100% legit.

When taking pictures of lightning, it is usually beneficial to use a longer than normal exposure time. This allows the lightning to fully strike then retrace back to it's source. And, since lightning is just like a flash, it only illuminates the scene for a fraction of a second, thereby making your effective exposure however long the lightning took to flash (which varies depending on how far the lightning has to travel).

The same principles are used in strobe photography; where they catch bullets in mid flight, balloons popping in mid pop, etc.

Also, since you can't necessarily predict exactly when and exactly where lightning will strike, you can just do like me and set your camera to a long exposure length or set it to "bulb" and use a remote to control how long you leave the shutter open. Unfortunately, the longer you leave the shutter open and the darker the image, the more ISO noise you get, even at lower ISO settings+longer exposures.

I usually set my f-stop to around 9 and then use either four seconds or "bulb" as my exposure. Of course, I've never taken pictures of volcanic lightning or even pictures of lightning during the daylight hours.

Alternatively, there are devices you can build/buy that will trigger your camera at the briefest flash of light. Unfortunately, these devices are not as good as doing things manually.

So, yeah, I say that it's quite possibly a real pic; but, as dingo said, it seems a bit close, and not telephoto lens close, just close.
