I also hate java. Programming in java is shit and java is slow as fuck.
But plenty of apps just require it

Downsampling does miracles indeed, it's almost impossible to achieve that kind of quality with the AA methods available on the market. Not even Witcher 2's ubersampling looks that good.

Pfffft PCSX2's GSDX has been using this technique for years (and probably more stuff before did it) 
It's a great idea for less intensive games when you have a sweet rig.
Hell, I'd reckon it would be perfect for DKS
