http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/02/08/new-republic-obsidian-actively-pitching-more-star-wars/#more-141549
Quote: | “I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with,” he told RPS during a recent interview. But wait, what about the EA-shaped Death Star hovering over The Old Republic? Well, Obsidian’s new tale is set in a very, very different time period.
“There’s a lot of different eras in Star Wars, and that’s what we would focus on,” Urquhart replied when I pointed out that The Old Republic’s relative lack of success could have Disney seeing that license in a less than favorable light.
“We pitched a between-Episode III and Episode IV game [to LucasArts]. Because we think that timeframe is super interesting. It’s the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi, it’s Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few. So it was an interesting time to set a game, and you know, Chris Avellone came up with a really cool story.”
“We also latched onto it because it has elements people remember, but not the stories. It can just completely not involve [the movies]. It can tease them, but nothing else.”
Of course, then a certain gigantic mouse fee-fi-fo-fummed along, unhinged its gargantuan plague ridden jaw, and swallowed Star Wars whole. So what happens now? Is Obsidian back at square one? Urquhart doesn’t think so.
“It’s something we’re still hoping for, even with the Disney/Lucas stuff going on,” he said. “It changes things a lot, but you know, we’re gonna push on it. I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with. We really worked on it hard and distilled it down to these eight or ten pages that really sold the story and characters. Then we sold it off to LucasArts and got a call back later that day. They were like, ‘This seems really cool. We want to talk to you guys, like, tomorrow about it.’”
“We haven’t [talked with Disney yet]. We’re kind of waiting for the smoke to clear. But that’s one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again].” |

Disney: - "I don't see any co-op and or multiplaya in here. Not a chance. "

I want a sandbox SW MMO in the E4-5 era with skill based character progression, heavy emphasis on role play and open ended gameplay. Oh, wait...

Give Obsidian freedom to make their game (without silly constraints) and we will celebrate ..though I fear that Disney will be intrusive as always, with their mainstream influence. Maybe a tie-in for Abrams' SW

I could see Disney making it as part of a tie in like mentioned above. I am sure they want to have a game to go along with the new movie.

Seeing how much effort Disney seems to put in the future SW franchise, I give this a big chance. I don't know how they'll react to an RPG though (atleast I assume it's an RPG).

Since we already have the action-ey Star Wars 1313, my guess would be, something a-la Mass Effect (which wouldn't be that bad, on paper).
I too don't think that a "proper old-school RPG" is in the plans, but perhaps I'm wrong

I've always wondered if I would like a hack 'n' slash game in the Star Wars universe, with a nice storyline and cutscenes. If they can beat D3 (shouldn't be too hard) it could be interesting.

wait wait wait. lucas arts 'loved it'? how is that a mark of quality these days, the amount of shit they put their name on and pump out.
for all we know, they coulda said 'well its about the empire building a cyborg wookie army, and then robot anti-obiwan leads them..
hmm... actually ok fine, that sounds pretty fucking sweet, but i doubt they came up with anything BETTER in order for lucas arts to say they loved it...
to be honest, all theyd have to do to make the ultimate star wars game, would be to copy/paste dragon age origins, change the character textures, change all the swords to blue light beams, change ogres to rancors, darkspawn to empire dudes, and the dragons to evil jedi boss dudes... you're fuckin golden, quite frankly... you wouldnt even really have had to have changed the story much.
hell, id have really looked forward to the dwar...sorry.. ewok stage, where one of the ewoks went a bit nutty and sacrificed lots of other ewoks to a death maze just so that she could relearn the lost art of turning ewok souls into giant metal ewok golems.. fuck yeah!!
thats right... 4 years ago, EA and bioware could have made the greatest star wars game ever.

Presumably they loved it because of the setting. Prior to the Disney buyout they were focusing most of their attention on the inter-trilogy time period. Perhaps they saw the game as a useful potential marketing vehicle for things like the tv series.
