Anyone has experience with this TV? I was looking at Samsung TVs, but fuck damn, their "smart" shit looks so horrible and is full of useless crap like waving and voice. LG's is shit too, but at least their remote is like a Wii remote and the home shit looks more elegant.

I've never gone wrong with either a Sammy or an LG. I own one of the 75" smart TVs (my parents are filthy rich and, when this TV broke after just over a month of ownership, they went out and bought something else and told me I could have this one if I could fix it. Some resoldering of the power plug and voila! a free TV!

And, yes, the smart features are crap, but are pretty cool at the same time. The 3D is pretty good, if not a little dim, and the gesture and voice features work as expected (sometimes better). Overall, I'd recommend either TV, but apparently, the Samsungs have some sort of add-on that allows you to add a different CPU if the need should ever arise (Evolution Kit or somesuch), I'm not sure how long that'll last... Also, the Samsung remote has a trackpad on it that I've found to be somewhat invaluable while trying to quickly navigate the Amazon On Demand and Hulu apps.

I will not be navigating "apps" haha.

But also, the LG TVs have IPS panels whereas the Samsung ones have S-PVA. I think this is also important.

lol smart tv crap. the only thing that matters is picture quality. i had LG IPS tv and didin't like it much. for tv you want very deep blacks, and IPS just can't provide that.

plasma is also kinda meh. don't get suckered in by reviews that say "latest plasmas are burn in and retention free". it's bullshit, i had a plasma which review said 0 retention, and after playing game for 40 mins i began seeing traces of retention. pathetic.

so what i'm trying to say is choosing a tv is really really difficult. first world problems Sad

my advice is wait a little, new TV models always come out Q1 of every year, so models that are now on the market are almost 1 year old.

That period has passed already. CES was almost a month ago, CeBIT is more about IT so it's rare to see new TVs around that period.

what i meant is Q1-Q2 of every year all major tv manufacturers (or most of them) update models to new ones.

for example samsung. 2011 Q1 D-series, 2012 Q1 E-series, 2013 Q1 F-series. same goes for LG and sony etc. you should see some nice discounts for old models around this time, if you are fine with having model that is getting phased out.

Here's my experience with the TVs I've seen at friends and family.

Philips: top model (I have the 9706) has probably the best picture quality from last gen. I haven't read anything about 9707. I was sceptical about ambilight, but it's an excellent addition now that I have seen it. Philips also has the most extensive smart platform here in the Netherlands I believe. It's a slow TV though and the internal mediaplayer sucks.
Excellent service here in the Netherlands, no questions asked and no dicking around (as opposed to Samsung)

LG: Great design, excellent internal mediaplayer (eats pretty much everything I throw at it, I had to go out and buy an external mediaplayer for my 9706 since the internal mediaplayer is just crap), best smarttv application I have seen among LG/Samsung/Philips (the UI is very intuitive).

Samsung: I have had very bad experience with Samsung. Our first TV was a Samsung and it had really shitty build quality, it had to be repaired several times. On top of that, Samsung has bad service in my experience. Build quality is a matter of luck too obviously, my cousin had the screen of his 9706 replaced five!!! times for example.
My sister and a friend have the last gen 50" top models, you won't believe how much bleeding it has. A TV worth 2200 euros with so much backlight bleeding is plain ridiculous. Another family member has a topmodel new-gen with all the fancy stuff, while the "look at me being scifi controlling the TV with motion" thing seemed quite unresponsive to me, the new CPU gives the TV a very obvious edge. It's a very fast TV and speed is a major pro when using smarttv (my 9706 is slow i that area for example).
Samsung also shines in overall design imo, but IQ was more important for me.

To conclude, here's my opinion based on several models:
Philips: if you have the money to buy a top model, you'll have excellent IQ. Ambilight is excellent.
LG: has some of the best midclass models. I would've bought LG since I won't spend 2000+ on a top Philips, but my uncle works at Philips so I got almost 50% discount.
Samsung: I had bad experiences with Samsung (which is luck), I saw bleeding on other people's TVs, but Samsung TVs have the best design and look very sleek when mounted imo.

if u get a plasma LG your good to go, thats what a friend told me today when i was searching for a good pc gaming tv to replace my old sony kdl40v3000 lcd. so i about to find that out differece is i have my eyes on the Panny because of the blacks, plasma technology has evolved since its 1rst generation making them last longer and energy consumption is better, only downfall would be a little shimmer aura around some parts of the picture but thats it.

What makes the Philips so much better?

Also, Samsung vs LG, I think the passive 3D is a very important factor.

The color correctness, contrast ratio and LED dimming on the Philips 9706 was the best of its generation (2012). It was also one of the very few TVs with full LED array.
I'd definitely go passive with 3D, I can't see much difference between passive and active (yeah yeah active is supposed to be better), but sadly most top models have active 3D since it's "awesome".

My advice, avoid edge-lit TVs (though the TV will be thicker as a consequence), if possible play with the TV to assess speed with smart applications, go with passive 3D if possible. I'd also recommend ambilight, but sadly you'll be stuck with Philips.
