LMAO, Valve are really gods in your eyes, console.
I can only agree partially on HL2 (which was an awesome shooter, but I personally don't think it deserves game-of-the-decade like awards ) and fully on Steam (there are no two different opinions here - it's the most successful online video-game distribution platform).
The rest - decent games having had little to no impact on me.
As for HL3 - I surely wait for it. But not as passionately as before...

Yes. For you. With iPhnatan we weren't talking about what we like and what we don't yes? We were talking about whether they are a company that is relevant today, and that can only be judged by the "public's opinion", not mine or his or yours.
Ask MOBA players if Valve is relevant today.
Ask those that love co-op if Valve is relevant today.
How many times have we said eg "oh, they turned eg Resident Evil to L4D ", well there you go, if it's imitated surely those that imitate it do consider it relevant.
Now compare Valve with eg id. Other than the small dedicated Q3L community no one gives a shit about them.

Fuck if I care about public opinion. I only speak my opinion. It was actually the Portal games that made Valve relevant, everything else has been mediocre. HL2 is the console game of an era where there was no console games yet.

Well that's retarded. You don't join a conversation eg talking about Nolan's relevancy today and say "no he is irrelevant, I don't like his movies".
It doesn't matter if you do or not because you alone cannot decide what's relevant in today's (per the example) filmmaking landscape. Do you understand that? He is very relevant whether you like it or not.
If we had a conversation about our personal preferences, that's different.

How is Michael Bay any relevant to my film appreciation? I do not watch the shit he makes, this I could care less what he makes. And I doubt Nolan or PTA or Wachowskis etc are influenced by his relevancy, thus turning him irrelevant to different target audiences.
How relevant is the Twilight flick series to films? Harry Potter flicks? None at all.
Just because you jack off to Valve bullshit does not make them relevant for everyone. Just like you had a laugh at the magazine that said Cloud Atlast movie was worst movie of the year 2012. Didn't hear you then saying "for me".
Lots of Valve's projects were not their own ideas - Dota 2, Portal or CS. They just refined these concepts. So, the impact of these titles should be awarded to their original creators.
To me, Valve have two good games - HL2 and Portal 2. Which may had their share of effect on other games but not as grandiose as you try to imply.

Right, funny how there's no mention of the original Half-Life in that phrase.
And HL2 "may" have had it's share of impact on other games?

I didn't mention HL1 because I don't like the game much. But, I agree the series was influential to other studios and their games. Portal 2, on the other hand, not that much.

And suddenly a lot of what you say in the Steambox thread makes sense.
To elaborate, and argue my point...
Quote:

But what he makes effects the industry you care about (assuming you care about films, in this example). It may not effect the films you enjoy, or the the film-makers you enjoy, but in the wider scheme of things Michael Bay's films make money, which in turn effects how studios react not only to films that are like Michael Bay blockbusters, but also films which are not. It's a domino effect, based on the fact that there's many things which decide what films (and games, and books, and TV series) get made.
So, whilst you may not care about (in this example) Michael Bay's films, there's no doubt you should note, and care, what effect he has on movies.

Except when you look at what effect they have had on movies that are greenlit. Would the Hunger Games have been made if Twilight hadn't made it big? Would Northern Lights and The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe have been made if Harry Potter wasn't?

A dev that can't even finish a series within an appropriate timewindow is not #1 in my books.
That's just plain fucking lazyness and retarded decision making

Half-life 2: Episode 4 or Return to Ravenholm was a title being developed by Arkane studios between 2006 and 2007 before eventually being cancelled. Little of the game beyond concept art and an animation reel demo has been seen before now. All images are verified as work from Episode 4.
Hi, Vic, there was indeed a project called Return to Ravenholm. We are big fans of Arkane and wanted to come up with a project we could work on together. We threw ideas around, they built some cool stuff, but we eventually decided that it didn’t make sense to pursue it at the time. As I recall, we felt like a lot of the staples of Ravenholm–headcrabs and zombies!–were pretty much played out, and the fact that it would have to take place sometime before the end of Episode 2 (so as not to advance beyond where Valve had pushed the story) was a creative constraint that would hamper the project…and Arkane.
I’m pretty sure that Gabe was referring to Ravenholm. Makes no sense why there would be [an Episode 4].
Poor Arkane had 3 projects canceled, this, the Crossing and LMNO. But they came back strong with Dishonored

Maybe there was a reason they scrapped it. Maybe it was all was turning a little crappy.
Ravenholm was my favorite level out of the whole game. The level I replayed maybe over two dozens times simply because of its creepy and haunting atmosphere.
- First there was GabeN "introducing" Dark Messiah, despite Valve not being the publishers of it:
- Then there was Return to Ravenholm in development in 2006-7 under Valve's supervision.
- Following its cancellation they began working on The Crossing. Another Source Engine game with Viktor Antonov, HL2's art director. While Valve wasn't the publisher this time, it's speculated they were close to its development:
The concept of cross-playing, a singleplayer campaign that can be joined by other people, or as they were describing it as the fusion of SP and MP has made it to a degree in L4D whose campaigns have a SP feeling but are meant for online play. Gabe Newell recently said Portal 2 was likely the company's last game with a pure SP campaign and they have to figure out how to make the games "single player plus", the same idea of The Crossing. Finally a leaked CV reveals The Crossing was supposed to have cross-playing between PC and 360, an idea that Valve has turned into reality in Portal 2 and almost made it in CS:GO as well.
tl;dr If Arkane was close to Valve they would have been bought out already, like it happened with Turtle Rock Studios.

Funny, I've never played Dark Messiah, but it looks pretty cool. Maybe I'll play it one day
I assume there are no HD mods for it around? It doesn't look that bad, but it doesn't look that great either. Why do all those crap games get HD packs but the ones that I actually might be interested in not
@Areius: trust me, I've tried it out of curiosity some months ago it still looks pretty good, including the textures. The gameplay is still a blast.. (go and play it, now!)
