I'm tempted to get this card to replace my 6950 that finally died earlier this week; XFX Radeon HD7850 Black Edition 2Gb.

Now I'm pretty sure this outperforms the 6950, which is fine. Bearing in mind I have a lowly C2D e8600 cpu, is it worth stumping up the extra cash to get a 7870 instead? I find various googling on these two cards very inconclusive to performance; some say the 7850 is very good, with the 7870 just a little better, others say the 7870 is miles better, with the 7850 struggling with some newer games.

I'm happy with as close to 60+ fps as I can get; I don't need 200+ as my eyes are just not that fast Laughing

i am not very current with ati cards, but isnt "x9xx" = dual = used to be, no ? And if so, i don't thing a 7850 (single) will outperform a 6950 (or not noticable). ofc, ignore, if it isnt the case (about x9xx = dual) Smile

I thought exactly the same as you, but I did some checking, and it appears a single 78xx outperforms a single 69xx.

The 7850 2gb cards are silly cheap too, I can get a new one for like £130 or so. I just don't want to get it and be left behind too quickly - I'm wanting a full upgrade as soon as xmas is done, something like a nice i5 and such like. (i7 is just a pipedream for my meager income Laughing )

His card died Sin, he's not replacing it as an upgrade. And no, 6950 and 6970 are both single GPU cards, as are 7950/7970.

As for the question at hand, at worst the 7870 is between 5-10% faster than a 6950. However, throw in some tessellation and other relatively new high IQ features, and you'll see it jump ahead by anywhere from 50-80%. As for 7850 vs 7870: the latter gets much better minimum framerates due to higher clocks; it also tends to overclock better than its smaller brother to begin with.

Not worth it, especially not with that CPU. It would be a waste of money.

edit: nvm didn't see the card died. Shell out the extra cash and get a 7870. The CPU thing still stands though, my E8500 at 4Ghz was a serious bottleneck for the 7870 (Witcher 2 taken as an example).

thanks for clearing that up. I thought the x9xx series meant it was double Smile (wasnt it the case at some point, like the 49xx ?) haven't had a ati for quite some time hehe.

+1 for the 7870, you can use it in your next CPU upgrade rig no problem.

The x99x are currently dual solutions(well, technically it's x990 Smile). 4 and 5-series topped out at x8xx (no x9xx), except for the 5990, which was a dual GPU, if I am not mistaken.

And yeah, I had my quotes appear in the message box from a different threads on occasion. Sometimes when you click a quick quote in one thread, it seems to paste your quotes from other threads as well Very Happy

Only once was it that fixed. 3870X2, 4850X2, 4870X2, 5970, 6990 are all of AMD/ATI's dual GPU cards (official desktop anyway, there's mobile as well and custom cards like 6870X2's etc). Nvidia are just as random: 7900GX2, 7950GX2, 9800 GX2, GTX 295, GTX 590, GTX 690.

So um, I was doing some thinking Laughing

I'm not going to buy a card now. I'm just going to upgrade everything.

I was thinking of getting soemthing like this. Or even this. And then getting a 7850 after xmas is done when I might have a little more cash.

Makes sense, no?
