Well hello there, fellow humpers.
Just in case anyone actually noticed my absence: First was 2 week vacation followed by crazy problems with my ISP couple days ago. (then there was me getting fired but that has nothing to do with anything)
Anyways. I got my internet working again and I got my connection upgraded from a 32 mbit/s to 100 mbit/s.
Now, besides the fact that I only get 80 when I connect my laptop directly to the modem - my wireless is stuck at a crawling 12 mbit/s (even when I sit basically right on top of the wifi router).

According to every description I could find the wifi card in my laptop (which is a dell laptop - I'll never buy a Dell laptop again) supports 802.11n so that surely can't be the bottleneck.
My router is a D-Link di-524 which should theoretically support 802.11g - not quite as fast but should still get me more then 12 mbit/s - unless I'm entirely stupid.

Got the latest firmware for the router (which still is like 5 years old >.< )
Pretty sure I got the latest driver for the wifi card as well.
Tried running the wifi network with and without encryption (currently using WPA2 with AES but like I said running it un-encrypted didn't do anything)

what else can I think of...
Running Avast in the background (deactivating that didn't do anything either)
Only firewall I'm running is the built in windows 7 one (again, deactivating it did nothing)
Fiddled with the broadcasting channel of the router and tried to find the least populated one / the one farthest away from used channels. Didn't do anything.

That's pretty much everything I can think of that even could be remotely related.
So, I'm stumped. Unless there's a) something I completely misunderstood and/or b) something so freaking obvious I just overlooked it (well, even then) I have no clue what to do.
Here's where you guys come in, be nice, help a fellow humper on his quest for fast internets, will ya?

use this to see if many others are using same channel as you , also are you sure the router is forced to run at 802.11g?

Does your router support DDWRT firmware?

@paintface
I used vistumbler for that. Default was channel 6 - which I suppose is the default channel for most wireless routers so I switched it to 9. Which no other wireless network it picked up used and it was the farthest away from any other used channel.
edit: and I checked. Yes, the router is forced to g mode.

@Bigperm
looked it up on the database on http://www.dd-wrt.com and according to that - and if I interpret the what I think is a typo correctly - my router doesn't have enough flash memory to run it. So, no. It doesn't support it.

worked at a nightclub. Was one of the guys who did the heavy lifting - making sure the bars were supplied with beverages etc. so one night I had a pretty shitty day. Got out of breath fast, heart racing, shit like that. Honestly, thought I was heading for a heart attack (26 years old btw) so I sat down for a couple of minutes.
Believe me I looked like shit. Cold sweat on my face, pale as all hell so you could instantly tell something was wrong with me.
In comes one of our bartenders who immediately starts yelling at me for not supplying his bar, that I was only sitting around chilling doing nothing. Stuff like that.
I just told him I wasn't feeling well, he said quote "I don't care". I asked him if he'd drive me to the emergency room if I collapsed (felt like it was about to happen) he said "I don't care, not my problem."
I asked him a couple more times and he just kept saying that he didn't care and that it wasn't his problem. Then I told him to go fuck himself.
And that got me fired. He didn't care about my health I told him to go fuck himself. Guess I said it more then once but still.
10/10 would tell him to go fuck himself again in that situation.

there's a pretty long backstory to the owner of the place and my brother (who used to work there as well). The owner was just waiting for me to make a mistake so he could fire me as well.

Tried changing the transmitting channel on the wifi? Usually should be able to in the firmware. If you are close to a lot of wireless networks. Is it otherwise stable?

oookay i just read through it again and im a little ..nothing to see here Laughing

Get a router with wireless N
The speed you are getting is pretty much standard speed for those routers.

Crap. Pretty much figured it'd be something like that by now. Guess I'll have to live with crappy wireless speed for the time being.
Thanks Smile
