My folks who are in their 60's have a 10 year old Dell PC that badly needs replacing, so I'm getting them a replacement for Christmas, but can't decide between a laptop or tablet Confused My budget is £400 and it will between http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009R15O3Q/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers and an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy tablet.

Why not ask your parents which they prefer, laptop or touch screens?

Well they've never really used a touch screen pad so it's difficult to know which they would prefer

everyone needs to have at least one proper computer in their house Smile

but why 17.3"? that will be fucking massive, especially since you are considering a 10" tablet!

a little out of budget, but what about something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-15-6-inch-Ultrabook-Integrated-Professional/dp/B0083G8BPY/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1353106063&sr=1-1

I'd go with a tablet, extremely easy to use/grasp for older people (ipad at least). Extremely light so very easy for them to carry around, like when you're cooking you just bring the tablet with the recipe with you instead of having to print it out or walk back and forth to look (this is something my parents love with the ipad). It's also easier to use from a bed etc. The disadvantage is that typing isnt good (if they're good/fast at typing, otherwise it wont matter), though they can get an external keyboard ofcourse if they're going to type a lot.

I gave my mom an ipad (she's 65) and she loved it. (I hated it myself though, but I only used it for a few minutes to help her figure it out)

unless they plan on typing a lot, as vurt said, I think the tablet is the best option by far.
