PostPosted: Wed, 31st Oct 2012 20:10    Post subject: Games on GOG that are NOT the definitive versions
I started replacing several old CD/DVD (scene) game releases with GOG's.. but they aren't always the best possible versions. Some observations:

Quote:
Amerzone: The Explorer's Legacy; it's the CD version. The DVD version has better quality videos, and I can confirm it's playing just fine on Win7x64 as long as you change the CPU cores affinity to 1 (otherwise it's still playable but FMVs run at a weird speed). edited 2 years later: on another computer I had a little more trouble to get the DVD version to work properly but I still managed to do it via a combination of compatibility settings and frame limiter software.

Riven; it's the CD version. The DVD version has better quality videos etc, and I can confirm it's playable on Win7x64.

Tex Murphy: Overseer; it's the CD version. The DVD version has better quality videos. Supposedly it's not compatible with modern systems though..

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones; it's the censored version. Downloading a cracked uncensored exe might be enough to convert it.

Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3; they are not the "Gold" versions that include extra levels. For TR1&2 those levels can be downloaded for free, but for TR3 they are not made available.

Might & Magic IV+V; Is the combine floppy version, not the CD talkie one.

Descent II; The Redbook audio included with the GOG version of Descent II is from
"Descent I and II: The Definitive Collection" which is different from the original soundtrack. Fix: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/descent_series/how_to_create_an_enhanced_original_descent_ii_soundtrack

Phantasmagoria; GOG is the DOS dosbox version NOT the windows version , dos version runs is 320x240 16 color mode when the windows runs movies and game in 640x480 256 color mode! hfric confirms the Windows version has a single, skippable, bug: http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2025608#2025608

Realms of the Haunting; It's a very "old" version of the game and it cannot be patched.

Zork: Grand Inquisitor; it's the CD version. The DVD version has better quality videos, but it's missing subtitles (AFAIK). (I don't know if the DVD version is compatible with modern systems.)

Fallout; is the uk/censored version. You can convert it though: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/fallout_series/is_this_euro_censored_or_us_uncensored/page1

Disciples 2: Gold; it doesn't have the 4 additional missions that were released in Disciples 2: Rise of the Elves Gold (2006 Edition).

Panzer General 2; it's miissing the Caging the Bear bonus scenario. Fortunately it can be obtained from the old PG2 modding community.

MDK 2; it's not the graphically revamped MDK2 HD version.

Earthworm Jim; it's the "Earthworm Jim 1&2: The Whole Can 'O Worms" dos version. Earthworm Jim 1 also had a separate Win95 release as "Earthworm Jim: Special Edition" with better visuals, new content/levels etc.

Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition; missing the expansions (<- most importantly) and built in enhancements Steam's Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition has.

Shadow Warrior Classic Complete; does not come with the built in enhancements Steam's Shadow Warrior Classic Redux has. In fact the vanilla version GoG is selling, is offered entirely free on Steam with the caveat it's missing the two expansion packs, which are available as a free download anyway: http://www.moddb.com/games/shadow-warrior/downloads Therefore the GoG version cannot be recommended.

Baldur's Gate: The Complete Saga; does not include the Enhanced Edition of BG1. Though the EE might not be the definitive one for everyone, some people do prefer it.

The Ball; is missing the free Portal-themed DLC levels the Steam version has.

ObsCure & ObsCure: The Aftermath; The two ObsCure games are no longer available on GOG. And even if you pirate the earlier GOG releases, they are missing the improvements/changes that were made for the Steam versions (360 gamepad support, some altered sound effects, etc). (Note: the Steam release also lacks a Sum 41 song due to licensing issues and the cutscenes are a little more compressed.)

I'll add more if I can think (or find out) about others. Anyone knows any more?

Oh, another! Descent 2's audio isn't the original Redbook godliness, it's a remix soundtrack from the "Descent 1+2 Definitive Collection" -- there's a link here to fix that;

Phantasmagoria 1 GOG is the DOS dosbox version NOT the windows version , dos version runs is 320x240 16 color mode when the windows runs movies and game in 640x480 256 color mode!!!! , they only did that because the windows version can't play ONE MOVIE FILE on disc 5 near the end its where you place the dragon statue on the pedestal to reveal the House has secret wall passages... on modern OS's but you can skip this movie making the default 7cd box game of Phanatsmagoria 1 compatible with win vista/7/8

Same is with GORKY17 aka ODIUM this GOG version runs in SOFTWARE MODE aka not using graphic acceleration dumping all gfx data though CPU then in HARDWARE MODE... the thing is METROPOLIS and GOG are in the same building they OWN the source code and still they made such a scam ... they later games are better now with added 3dfx/Riva emulator [example LANDS OF LORE 3 has a custom made 3dfx and riva emulator that can be copied to any old game making it fully compatible with WIN7/8 ]... but why didn't they add it in Gorky 17 is beyond me

I bought only this TWO GAMES ON GOG and it was a huge SCAM .... making me not ever caring about buying they shit again now i pirate it away

Aye, I remember you asking about it. I was surprised that Epsi told you to get the 1CD version from eBay, it's only the 2CD release that has full talkie mode -- at least, as far as I can tell anyhow.

Do not buy this game on GOG. It's a very "old" version of the game and it cannot be patched. I bought a newer version on eBay with bug fixes and additional input options.

Well if I understand well, it behaves the exact same as the retail version, no? So while it's unfortunate that they didn't make it any better, that doesn't make it a worse version than the retail. So I'm not including it on the list.

I don't think that's an issue to be honest, although I can understand that people might want the extra languages. Smile

Thank you all!!

A few words about

Riven; it's the CD version. The DVD version has better quality videos etc. The stupid people at GOG have said that the publisher DID give them access to both versions but they preferred to use the CD version because the DVD version uses .VOB videos. Which is wrong! The only VOBs used are for the making of, and that's only in the 1998 DVD (the 10th Anniversary DVD dropped them). In fact.. if only the DVD version used VOBs (MPEG2!) videos! It would make them look so much better! Crying or Very sad

well they didn't include they custom made 3dfx and riva emulator in it that would run this game in 3D acceleration mode and to add more :

Code:
I just bought this game and I am bummed out! It won't even start up. This is the first game I have ever had problems from using GOG.I used my last $6.00 buying this thing. Now it's raining outside and I have a botched game. Hey GOG, how about refunds for people that bought this game? How about a heads up about NVIDIA compatibility issues. It would have been nice if I would have know about them before I purchesed this buggy game.

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/gorky_17/what_is_the_hope_of_getting_gorky_17_fixed/page4

just read it GOG version of GORKY17 does not even work properly Laughing

I can't find this game on GOG anyway. I know it recently has been released as freeware but I cannot find it on GOG or any reference that it was at a time available.

What's going on?

So, no, not a definitive version.
