Got a laptop here with a faulty SATA 2 hard drive in it. Is it ok to swap this with a SATA hard drive?

Will there be a noticeable performance drop?

The laptop is only used for internet mainly.

Are SATA and SATA2 connections the same?

Also never changed a hard drive on a laptop before, is it just as easy as pop old drive out, pop new drive in, re install windows?

Its a Dell inspiron n5030

Yeah, I think they're compatible and that you won't notice a performance drop. And yes, it's piss-easy to change drives, like on desktops.

You may want to wait for confirmation if you're gonna buy something, I'm not 100% sure.

SATA 1 is maximum 150 MB/s transfer rate, no mechanical 5400 or 7200 rpm drive can reach it anyway.

Thanks all so SATA is 150 MB/s and SATA2 is 300 MB/s??

Looks like it was a SATA 2 I got anyway, it just said SATA on the box but in the specs it said 300 MB/s

Fired it in and fired Win7 back on and all running... Hopefully this will be it sorted now, Re installed windows 3 times on this system now and it just kept corrupting after 2 - 3 days and not booting, ran a diag and it said Hard Drive problem so hopefully this new WD drive will sort it.....
