How can we improve the community?
(I know this whole section has this very purpose, but I don't see this being directly asked very often, so I'm curious)

The world has gone mobile. If you check your visitor stats it will no doubt confirm this for a lot of your visitors. I'd add Tapatalk, it works for Android + iOS tablets and phones
Adding features from the garus plugin would also be neat, automatic image scaling and that sort of thing
Embedded Youtube videos, with another plugin that turns any quoted videos into a link to the video page to avoid repeats |
Yep, people like customisation. So allowing for more customisation would be nice. Titles, colours, etc.
I know people fear embedded videos, but there is no reason to. Youtube videos don't play automatically, so they wouldn't make sudden noises. Would be just like posting a link to a video.
Mobile version or Tapatalk support would be nice.
But these don't really "improve the community". What is improving the community? Replacing the people here? Adding upon them? I'd say, it would be nice to have more people and have much more active community. For this, I think, we need something inviting to introduce people to the site. Let's admit it, no one cares about NFOs anymore. No one has been caring for years. Shit is available with such ease these days. So having a main page that is about NFOs is useless. Instead, put a tech/gaming/etc portal, where people post news. Have a comments section that requires people to be members of the site to post. This will give people incentives to join the forum. Maybe not all will post here, but if some brush off, we have gained.
We already have an unofficial Facebook and YouTube pages. Embrace them, make them official. These are popular venues of introduction. Facebook page can post on gaming pages and make itself known. YouTube page already has many funny and gaming videos. Embrace them.
We need more mods. Everyone keeps saying "less trolling" but 4-5 semi-active mods (pumpy, horror, epsilon, max and invasor by my last count) and 2 admins aren't enough, I think. Find people you trust and let them moderate. When the moderating team is involved with the community, it can help shape it and move it toward a better direction. Coming out with such announcements as "no more trolling" is never going to work because that's what people have been doing for the last two and a half years. You need to work with the people. When more mods are active, people will care more about their posts and style.

Same with me, what Leo said.
We got such a wide area of discussions, don't want to pigeon hole it into a 'niche' of youtube or facebook gaming reviews/info as the main draw for new people. But then again, not really going to draw anyone in with world news, or useless void...they got 4chan for useless void even if its more lowbrow, and any random news site for news.
If anything, if we get new people..I'd think we'd need something other than 'public and VIP" as the 2 areas to post. maybe add a new area that has some requirements to post in. Something that we could at least keep the new riff raff out of, and encourage the active and new people to work towards being able to get into. sort of a "VIP lite" area, that everyone can see, but you must prove your worth posting in it, if we get a flood of people for some reason..if you get my point.
And same for adding/tweaking the Moderators. if you add more. Assign them to the forums that they are intersted in. IE. don't give a guy that doesn't care about world news, responsibility to moderate world news. As then its feels like a chore. and hes not enjoying it. Assign Mod groups. Like Gaming Mods, News Mods, etc..they can overlap of course. but then it doesnt feel like we have 'swiss army' mods that try to cover vastly different topics and areas of interest.
Like if I was mod (Im NOT asking for it dont take that as a 'wink wink nudge nudge' type thing, just giving an example) I'd have no interest, care, or concern about any console areas. Reading and editing posts in there would be tedious, boring, and a drudge to me. As the last console i touched with any personal interest in was the SNES. So reading that area would be just a 'requirement' I'd have to do..id have no care for the content of it personally.
for the trolling thing, I'm fine the way its been..long as new fresh faces doesn't equal we turn into 4chan/reddit trolling..
Everyone here has at least some sense of respect for others, even if they dislike them (most people).
One of the reasons this is the only forum i goto everyday for like the last 7 years. (actually the ONLY forum I've been active in pretty much)
Most the people here are intelligent, can hold a conversation, even if its in a heated argument form, and one of the few forums I've seen where it seems like 90% of the community isn't just kids that have parents using the internet as a babysitter. Id hate to see that change.

For me, not go mainstream so much...as make it less of a 'handful of guys that make 95% of the post".
Right now its akin to a group of guys that get together after work for some pints shooting the shit with each other...and every now and then someone in the pub tosses in their 2 cents and wanders off.

I disagree. Mods can have judgement and moderate all sections. This is not a huge place that requires delegation. Otherwise, if gaming mods are MIA for some reason, and some idiot posts a warez link, there is no one to remove it. Like wise, if some idiot posts racist text in world news and there is no news mod around, text stays there. If you were a mod, you'd be able to moderate any section, yes, even the console area, even if you don't care about it.

Oh not saying they cant mod the other areas in need. I was more speaking of they tend to be the main one of the areas they are interested in when the topic is in context to the subject.
Like if there was an argument in consoles about hardmods and chips for it, Me myself id have NO idea if someone was posting wrong information. They could say "The 'bad-ass 4000' modchip for xbox is the current best chip for playing burned DVD's" as a information thread..and Id have to go google if thats even a chip to start with..as Id have no clue. Or someone making a post about some scene release of a game for ps3 being nuked..I'd not even know it was released since I dont follow console releases to verify it.
And was more a 'worst case' if all of a sudden we had a mass of new people wandering in. And was just my take on it, more of a "If I had to choose a setup" personally.

Well I just asked the admins about the main suggestions, let's see how it goes.
What I do know is that some changes regarding game talk/releases are already in the works.
