Although funny, I think this those thing is being blown out of all proportion.
i can see both sides of the argument, personally I dont see the need for change and it strikes me that someone has got pissed of and forced this through (so to speak) but I must admit sometimes all those derp pictures and other shit do just seem that, shit.

I don't like all the troll/rage emoticons either, but this is not about what I or max or you individually like. It's about what the community as a whole wants, and if this is what they want, either we adapt or attempt to influence it to change. But not through force.

As i said I think its getting blown out of all proportions.
If he started banning people for doing it I would agree, but at the moment (I presume) they are just going to delete the shit posts.
and all that is going to effect is the posts post count. I do agree with the idea that the community should be asked, but I would have presumed to be honest thats what VIP members were for rather than the community as a whole because overall people are morons (apart from myself of course) and even worse when in a group.
Had they asked the VIP members they would have got a pretty decent response and then could have made a decision based on that. They didnt do that, so it seems they simply wanted this rule and to hell with what the users thought.
In a few weeks everyone will have forgotten about this anyway and will be back to bitching about how <insert new game here> is crap.

I honestly don't really feel either way about this. I don't hate the idea of new rules... but I also don't applaud them. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how this pans out before taking a stand either way :\

it WAS discussed in the VIP forums actually if you like to look it up... although in all fairness it sort of trailed off thanks to trolling and meme stuff again lol and as its clear from That topic its hard to even get a consensus from the people but i think even the people who were in favor of the icons and meme stuff agreed it was getting stupid and dumbing the whole place down...
Leo himself told me in there to go ask the admins and since we are the mods to make a rule and enforce it...
now its apparently wrong...

I think consensus was that people agreed it was an issue but nothing to ban anyone over which i agree usually...

sorry its VIP forums... lol i thought keeping it to VIP would help it stay more on topic and get feedback from the most active users and most dedicated ones... i summarized the basic outcome though... majority agreed that it was getting out of hand but they definitely didnt want heavy handed approach as they didnt see it as a huge issue.... so thats why simple edit or deleting of posts would suffice.

I have my opinion of what this forum should be, and it is not far off of where you want it. But I don't think the way to go is by forcing it. You force such thing on gamers section, in threads for example like Call of Duty, and you alienate me. When I am alienated, I troll more.
You say "consensus was", "people agreed" but I don't see that. I went over the thread. It was very easy to see how people posted there is a small microcosm of the entire forum. You just see what you want to see.

I'm in no way cheering for, or against the new changes..they don't effect me really as far as I can tell. so I'm indifferent..And Im not arguing against what you wish Leo, just pointing out an error in the logic.

Take any of the other nfosites that we all left eventually. because of the userbase, and the rule changes. IT wasn't good choices, and it alienated the users so they jumped ship. But it was what happened..and showed in the end the that like any other site, the Controllers of the forum is a dictatorship if they so wish it to be. ONLY if the powers that be WANT it to be a community based decision, is it, and that's only because they allow it to be, not because its a right to be one.

I feel the "you cant make all of the people happy, all of the time" applies here.
The only problem is that each person individually wants to make sure they ARE in the "happy" side. And when you have 100% of the people saying "Oh yea sure you cant make EVERYONE happy with changes, just make sure that I'm in the side that is"...you see the problem they have when making changes.
You state "You say "consensus was", "people agreed" but I don't see that."
And I'm not in the VIP section to see the debate, but by the new rule, who isnt happy? who was going "I think the opposite, we need MORE single meme posts, I cant get enough of them!"

While what you say is technically correct, a forum is as good as its members. If there are no members left, what will Rinze accomplish? So when I say the community should be taken into account, I assume an administration that is seeking what is best for the forum, as opposed to its personal bickering.
It should be a balancing act. Admins set the tone, mods mod and the community slowly goes into that direction. Sudden forcing would only bring more trolling, I think, just to "stick it to the man". |

If the rule is take for WN section alone, it is not that bad. If such rule is applied to PC gaming, for example, I am not sure how much good it would do, as what would happen, in my opinion, is just more trolling, and more work for mods who are supposed to now enforce some rules (and thus "Report this post" trolling as well). Lose lose. |

Oh I agree with you then, it should be presented as a 'what you guys think of this?" and decided.
But on the other hand, I can see where they are coming from.
I see people all the time, type out a long response either directed to someone, or in general...correct or not as they may be. and someone replies with just a meme. (unless it everyone vs the first guy..then its just a gang mentality of 'thats funny!'.)
I cant think of anyone that goes "well that was a well thought out counter argument, and see your point" when they see it. Most the time it just annoys everyone but the person that posted it.
Its like watching a good debate in person, with 2 or more people having a heated discussion that's interesting..and it being ruined by someone eventually going:
"Well you see my side of it disagrees with what you are saying..and here is why" and they go "You know who also disagrees with you..THESE NUTS!!" while grabbing their crotch.

Either way is fine with me. I don't really get annoyed by seeing it. But i can also see where they are coming from about the excessive use of it.

But let me give you the opposite of what you just described. You often go into "serious" and "heated" debates with Ronhrin, that only interest you two. So people see a ballooning thread, which doesn't really interest them, but it's ballooning and they want to post. So they put a meme, or some gif, or whatever. And it makes a lot more people laugh than the two of you. I won't comment of what I think of this, it's irrelevant. I do it too sometimes despite being annoyed by it. But it's not that difficult to just ignore the derp and continue the discussion. Are we with such short attention spans that one derp or one meme or one animated gif makes us so crazy that we lose our line of thought? I don't think so.

OH yea, I totally ignore them. doesn't bother me. Why I'm neither for or against the rule.
Never came into my head personally as something to think about.
Just saying I can see both side of it. And can see why both have valid points.
But in the end me not being able to post one off meme emoticons doesn't really change the enjoyment of the forum as a whole..and can deal with the new rule.
