The recent kindle thread gave me an idea for a b-day present for my wife. At first I ordered one of the basic kindles, but quickly changed my mind and ordered a Nexus 7. Woman deserves it Razz.

I've never had a tablet or an android phone for that matter so I got no clue how all this works. My question is what software will I be able to run on this. I'm assuming it has to be android software, but is it the same stuff that runs on phones? Are there specific apps that only work on Nexus tablets? If I decide to pirate something, do I just look for android apps?

Sometimes you'll need an installer like Astro to install cracked .apks, but yeah, pretty much what garus said; download, copy, install, play.

Excellent. Thanks for quick replies. I hope she won't be disappointed. Looking at few reviews seems like a decent peace of hardware.

Yeah. Not bad at all. Was thinking of getting her a new laptop, but this is obviously much more portable, a big plus. She doesn't do any real work on PC anymore, just basically needs to browse the net (read: facebook) etc., so this seems very fitting.

For this price range (and even higher...) the Nexus 7 is scarily impressive. It beats the ever-living shit out of the Kindle Fire HD and for less money too.

Yeah nice, but 7" MIGHT be a little bit too small, depending on what you'll use it for.

Yeah. 7" does seem small on paper, but looking at various video reviews it seems like it fits in average hands very nicely. Like I said, she won't be using it for anything too serious, but I think it will come useful when the desktop is taken over, or when she's away from home, which is a lot lately.

So far the only extras I would like to see on this thing is SDHC slot, and possibly HDMI port. Rear facing camera would be nice too. All that would come at increased cost, so I can't complain.

On my 1 week old Nexus 7 the screen glass is separating from casing :/ From the left side, you can see it if you watch closely (bothers the shit out of me, even its so minimal). Seems to be very known problem for these tablets, x da forums is full of them (shame its a sick tablet otherwise, quality control is shit). Ah wel cba to RMA it, since its like 99% change to get faulty one (separating glass) or even worster, if the separating gets worse ill swap it then (otherwise the tablet is flawless, no dead pixels and colors are good and no backlight bleed).

Have tried couple "Fixes" but none have worked so far (im thinking to separate the glass fully with heatgun and then apply epoxy glue and smash it together). Damn you Asus for using this shitty glue!.

That sucks. I like the Nexus 7 but i think ill wait for further price drops and a bigger screen size. B&N will have their 9" for same price as Nexus 7 i think, which should be good for competition. Cant believe you actually tried to fix it... now they can say it was user error Laughing Shocked

As someone who is commuting on a (very) crowded subway, holding a 10" device would be a huge pain in the ass.

In other news, I somehow managed to turn on and "pocket dial" an incorrect pin code on my nexus 7 yesterday 3 times (yes, it fits in my pants pocket) between getting off the train and getting to my desk at work (3 mins at most) ... which made it do a factory reset as per the exchange security policy my work has Sad

You cant tell that you have tried to fix it, since there are no warranty stickers or anything. Google itself said this fix can be tried yourself (from X DA-forums). Also what comes to the 32GB model, i dont need the storage (and it was not available when i needed the tab).
