|
 |
Someone bought a PC for me to try and fix. Basically its not posting and after changing the RAM, PSU and video card, the only thing I can assume is its a fault with the P4 CPU or the motherboard. I noticed whoever built it has gone crazy with the heatsink paste. The top of the CPU is covered in it and its even on the pins underneath! Could this be the cause for it not posting?

Take away the paste from the pins and try again. Sin, from what Disney show is that?

I cant clean the paste from the pins! Its between them and I have nothing I can use to get it off. I would have to use some kind of cleaning fluid! Its not my CPU so Im not going to do that. Besides that might not even be the problem with it!

the pins get no electical contact with the socket if they are covered in paste. I'm also not sure if the board or cpu gets fried if fluid runs in the socket while in use.

Thanks for the replies guys. Ill just tell him its the board or CPU that needs replacing and that he should use the paste more sparingly in future! He may as well have dunked the whole thing in the stuff lol

what color paste is it? is it the white crappy stuff you get free with some cpu's or heatsinks? as long as its not arctic silver or anything metal based it wont matter. if you buy a vapochill they give you a tube of thermal paste to put in the socket to prevent condensation , and to use on the cpu between it and the evap... so as long as its not electrically conductive it wont harm the cpu. if you wanna clean it off soak the processor in some i.p.a and itll get rid of most of it
