Spore might not have been a financial succes(never seen any numbers) on its own but it was one of the most talked about games for years. The subsidial income it garnered I dont think its negligible

It's 1.5 million copies. Not much.

And the sales were abysmal, while the expectations were around at least 5 million copies. They've spent a tremendous amount of money, a lot of those money for advertising it.
Also they thought that they could milk the game in the same way they are milking Sims, which didn't happen. The game was a hybrid between Sims, Civ and a casual game, not pleasing any of the respective fans. Hence, the spectacular failure, especially after the game being overhyped so much.

The problem was EA took Wright's original vision for Spore, which looked pretty awesome (go dig up that 60 minute alpha demo video on Youtube from a year or two before the retail version released), and streamlined the shit out of it to appeal to the mass market. As has been the case numerous times, when that apparently turned out not to be the source of unlimited riches, they trotted out their favourite bogeyman piracy to explain away the lacklustre sales.
It's a scenario the industry has played out time and again. TOR was also a victim of it, if you go back and look at the very earliest concepts they proposed for it.

Even once it goes F2P, you still have to buy a copy. I think they are dropping it to $15 or $20.

It's free to play. All that means is no subscription. You still have to buy a copy of the game. It's no different than something like Guild Wars 2 in that regard.

Yes, the purchase price includes one month of full access.
If you want to pay absolutely nothing, there's always the unlimited trial capped to level 15. I imagine that will continue on after the full F2P transition to entice people in.

The only thing I read that even remotely hints at this is them lowering the price in august to 15 bucks. There is not a single word that even hints at having to buy a key after they go f2p.

I saw it at a few places, but this is one reference from IGN that turned up from a quick Google search:
"Additionally, EA and BioWare say that the new free-to-play option will enable them to increase the frequency of content updates. The first of the new updates will come this August, alongside a temporary sale of The Old Republic for $14.99, which nets users both the game and a one-month subscription. "
Looking at the official site though, it seems the game itself will also be free at some point later this year, as they make several references to being able to download and play to level 50 for free. So it could be the $15 is just an interim cash-in, and old plan that has since changed, or just a misunderstanding.

Derp, if I can't play for free, it's not free to play. It is a subscription-free option.
World of tanks, Tribes:Ascend, Blacklight Retribution, TF2, LoL (I think ?)
Those are f2p, well I may be wrong about 1-2 of them, but you get my drift.

That is a temporary sale for august only for those people who wanna earn some "cartel points" before f2p will be launched , after that you won't need to buy ANYTHING in order to play , you will have to buy a "premium service" (or whatever will be named) to earn cartel points and unlock content witch is not available for free (unlimited warzones , space misions , operations) the story will be free , you won't need to buy anything.
out of sig inspiration for the moment

well, 15$, with proper not limiting no sub, would be better than 0$ and limited free option.., but from that quote it seems more like they are just giving tor for free until it goes f2p , but you have to pay sub price. hence 14.99 for sub + 0 for game =14.99 total

decided to play this again, GW2 wasnt really my kind of game. Having a blast sofar with my sith assassin. They've taken down quite a few servers which makes the existing ones populated and as such theres no big problems finding people to group with.
Anyone else who recently started playing swtor? Im hoping for some more end game stuff soon but sofar ive rolled an assassin as mentioned with a planned republic soldier and the mirror class of the sith inquisitor in the works...

I played it again for about a month not long ago. The game is ok - but there's too much grinding between the good story bits. The endgame is tired and repetitive.
I was hoping they'd implement a real space combat segment with PvP, or at the very least fix up Ilum and make it perpetually interesting.
Unfortunately, that's not in the cards - and I don't think F2P is going to make that more likely to happen. I expect them to simply turn out raid content and PvP maps. Boring when the core game doesn't really change and there's no reason to grind gear beyond being able to grind more gear.
It's a hugely flawed loop-design that seems to be enough for most fans of the genre. Not for me, though.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Lead Leaves BioWare [Oct 04, 2012]
A new Twitter account from Daniel Erickson announces his departure from BioWare Austin, where he was Creative Director and lead designer on Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMORPG that has not proven to be the force in the marketplace that some expected.
The reasons for this are not revealed, but along the way he comments on the current focus of commercial game development: "When 90% of the industry is saying the exact same thing (social, mobile, FTP!) a huge number of people are going to lose that race."
