yay guys. long time that i don't make a serious game investment and now, that time has come.
i currently own a i5 @ 2,80 Ghz, 6 gb hyperx ram, a gtx460 1gb.- on a asus maximus iii gene mobo.
looking at current intel prices, freaked me out. damn expensive and besides, expensive mobos as well.
so, i stared at amd and get hyped with their prices, now, my first question: as i will use the system only for playing games, would be ok to switch to amd?
i have following configuration in mind:
1.- Mobo: Asus M/B AMD Crosshair V Formula/Thunderbolt
2.- CPU: AMD CPU FX-4100 X4 3,6 GHz 4 cores, OR: AMD CPU FX-8120 X8 3,1 GHz 8 cores.
does one really need an 8 core CPU for gaming? (keeping future games in mind).
either cpu's with the mobo, does a 1/3 of the price (and less) in comparisson of a i7 CPU and a good mobo.
i plan to put in the amd system a gtx680 (zotac o evga, both are equally in price). gonna change ram too, maybe 8 or 16, price is nearly marginal.
like i say, as i will use this only for gaming, i have the doubt about how amd is performing in it.
pls guys! some feedback!!
p.d. maybe the solution is only changing the video card and some more ram,,, that would be the cheapest way!! me liking that way!!! (as the motherboard, is old and really small and can't do overclocking without random reboots, that pissed me off,

Keep the i5, get two 4GB sticks of RAM to replace the ones you have, and buy a better GPU. That is IMO the best solution.
A GTX670 if you can afford it.
Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

What SiN said.
Put 2gigs more RAM in and get a GTX 670 or something similar.
Intel is currently much better for performance compared to AMD.
i5 6600k @ 4.3 GHz | MSI z170 Gaming M7 | 32GB Kingston HyperX Fury | 850 Evo 500GB | EVGA 1070 SC | Seasonic X-660 | CM Storm Stryker

Agreed. I'm actually more than a little shocked you would even consider changing the i5 to .. well... ANY equivalent from AMD. It's just not cost effective and you'd even end up losing performance since the SB/IB chips are clock-for-clock faster than AMD at the moment.

Not this generation, not as far as I know. Even their new FX relaunch aren't as good.
