I just borrowed a wd passport usb3 from a friend to test out my front usb3 header.

At first it wasn't working properly at all, like hanging all over the place.

Then I found out the Etron usb 3 chip had a big driver update rumored to fix these issues. Btw, windows update doesn't have the latest drivers for Etron so it must be done manually.

Anyways, I retried the drive and now connection is stable. However, transfer speeds act up a little.

I benched it with CrystalDiskMark and on the front panel I get a Seq result of: 45/35 (r/w).

However, when I connect the drive to the rear I get nearly double those results, in fact nearly identical: 84.41/83.75 (r/w).

Thing is, it seems that in both front/rear transfer speed is somewhat "ok". I mean, things do go fast after all. However, I noticed that when transferring a file over the front panel, it sort of hangs near the end of the transfer where it says "5 secs to finish". It hangs like 10-20s and only then finishes the transfer.

I figured I'd try Turbo USB3 but that seem to only affect the rear panel, but besides that, the whole point is, that things like a 2.5" passport drive you ALWAYS want to connect on the front (easy access) so practically I'd never bother with the rear port.

I also tried updating the drive to the latest firmware which went successfully but didn't make any noticeable change.

So, what do you think? Sad

PS, also updated my board to latest BIOS which had an optimistic remark ("improved usb3 compatibility").

Only thing I can think of is if the cable in the case shielded properly? And does the front panel have a good earth?

The define r3 usb3 cable seems pretty solid. How can I know if it's grounded properly? I didn't do anything besides connecting everything to the motherboard headers.

Btw, I'm also getting static noise when hooking up my headphones mic while the mic switch on the headphones is OFF. Laughing

Well for example. My Antec 1200 case has a black wire (the earth) coming from the front panel to the chassis at the top. The connection is poor because the case is painted and then afterwards the earth is screwed in place. I had slow transfer speeds and static on my headphones until I found a better place for the earth to go... I attached it to my DVD writer.

Edit: When I say I attached it to my DVD writer I just mean to the metal frame of it.

So you need to add such a cable? It doesn't come with the case? Why does it sound like such a simple, small thing yet causes such a fuss? Neutral

i don't get it.

I would guess your front panel will be earthed somehow, have you checked for a black cable coming from it? I just googled about my problem and found that it is a common fault with my case.

Also if the cable isn't shielded very well, electrical interference could be the culprit.

I remember when I started playing a game the noise on my headphones would suddenly get worse. That was because the front panel cable going to the motherboard was very close to the graphics cards power cables.

I'm not too sure how everything technically works, I just followed simple instructions.

Yeh, I was thinking about it for a sec and then I realized what you did. Makes sense.

I reckon I need to disassemble the front of the case to find out what's going on with the grounding. Stupid of me not thinking about it before. I think this is probably what's causing these issues.

Besides the static noise and usb3 issue, there's also a problem with the middle usb 2 port.

The case has one cable that splits into 2x usb2 ports but hooks to just one 3x power header. The problem I'm experiencing now is that the middle port can't hold a stable connection even if I connect my usb2 passport drive. Same when I try to connect the iphone to it. Something seem to render it nearly useless (the grounding I guess).

Edit: when I connect the headphones (audio & mic) to the rear connections of my card it works perfectly. No static noise, recording works perfect.

Looks like I'm on my way to solve this problem.

I took the front door off and removed the front audio/mic module from it's mount. It basically a really small pcb with 2 metal screws holding it against the plastic. I took it out, plugged the headphones and mic and it's working perfectly. I'm gonna try now putting it back together, if it does the same problem then the 2 screws are causing the problem somehow.

front usb3 requires very quality cables to achieve full usb3 performance. if you are using case from lesser brand (not Corsair, Antec or other well established brands), chances are they cheaped out on front panel usb3 cable.

Nah, I don't believe Fractal Design went cheap on me. It's a 100$ case.

on a scale of quality cases for enthusiasts, 100$ is low end really. most quality cases start at 150-200$. and yes, it's very possible they cheaped out on usb cable, i remember corsair said they even need to custom manufacture usb3 front panel cables, because typical ones just lack performance at lengths that are required to reach mobo-> front panel.
