I created a thread a long time ago, asking for ideas/thoughts on a home server, but in the end I never ended up buying it.

Now though, I'm more interested in getting one, and I've picked out some parts to build with, and as usual asking for input Smile

The server will be doing a few things:
- Backup & storage of my photos and PSD-files (FTP access etc)
- Media server for streaming (1080p movies and TV-series) with XBMC
- Downloading and unpacking the movies automatically etc (NZBs)
- On 24/7 of course
- Sometimes I want to run game servers on it, like Minecraft or whatever

And here's what I came up woth:

Case: Fractal Core 1000 case (cheap, discrete-looking and good quality)
Motherboard: Asrock 960GM-GS3 FX
CPU: AMD FX-4100 X4 3,6GHz
RAM: Team Elite 8GB (2x4096MB) CL11 1600MHz
PSU: Antec VP350P 350W
Graphics: KFA2 GeForce G210 512MB (no fan/passively cooled)
HDD: 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm SATA 6Gbit/s (planning on getting another 3TB drive a month later or so)

And all this costs around 475 EUR. I could for sure buld a cheaper one, but would the price/performance be as good? I don't want it to struggle with anything of the things it's supposed to do. RAM is so cheap anyway, so why save a tiny ammount of money and just get 4Gb?

Anyway, let me know what you all think.

Wait, hm.. is the i3 2120 a better or worse option? Seems a little bit faster but with 2 cores instead of 4, but then it's also a little bit cheaper since I can skip the graphics card and just use the Intel onboard graphics.

Do note that the server will stream to four displays in the apartment via HDMI.

Oh, I missed the Liano CPUs!

An AMD A6 X4 3670K with a Gigabyte mATX mobo w/HDMI port costs even less than both the previous configurations.

Not a bad idea, best choice I could find:
be quiet! Straight Power E9 400W 80+ Gold

Seems to be pretty much silent aswell.

I'm just about to redo my server as well Razz
I'll be running an old E2160 though, can't be bothered buying a new CPU.

It all looks good to me, won't get much cheaper.

Fuck FTP access though, I'm personally looking at going for iSCSI this time rather than plain shares like I have now. What OS you planning to run? For me, it also acts as a server for some devices that only work in Windows, so I'll stick with Win7 (runs on that now as well).

I'm just gonna run a FTP server so I can access my files from work or anywhere else in the world, at home I'll just do plain shares, like you Smile

And I'm gonna run Win 7.

I'm planning to format this weekend and have a fiddle with iSCSI (supposedly much better for speeds on all fronts than Samba a.k.a. Windows Shares), I'll let you know how that works out Smile

For the PSU, this would be my choice btw: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/259805/seasonic-x-460-fanless.html

Bit more expensive obviously Wink
Or if you don't feel comfortable with fanless, the X-560, which will keep its fan turned off until you hit 30-40% load or so anyway Smile

Not available where I'm shopping and I wouldn't buy it anyway, a bit too much for the application

Still, thanks for the tip Smile

At first I didn't know what you were talking about, but then I went back and looked in the thread about my current rig, and there I said I'd post a pic!

It's not much to see really, but I can still post a pic if ya like Smile
