I borrowed a friends 100% real and legitimate half-life 2 cd version. I've tried installing it several times using various cracks and patches including the vengance offline patch but with no luck. With the vengance offline patch I get the following error while trying to boot:
Invalid or corruipt background texture materials/console/background01.vtf
How can I get this up and working properly?

Just use his steam account.
Then use it in offline mode.

I don't understand. Do you want to play HalfLife two offline or do you want to play an online game through Steam?

You won't be able to use the vengeance crack on a retail copy because they have rebuild all the files

is it still possible to play HL2:Source online with a downloaded version?
My System:
CPU : AMD "Barton" 2500+.
Memory : 768MB DDR PC2100.
GFX : Nvidia 6600GT DDR3 128MB , AGPx8
M\B: Gigabyte GA-7VT600P-RZ MotherBoard
Sound: AC97 Realteck 5.1 ALC655 - Audio.

Yes. Just download the content using someone elses account. Click offline mode and you can play it.

couldnt understand it....
first of all i need to install all the updates??? from 1 to 14???
then install steam..and then what?
