|
 |
My parents are finally going to upgrade to a slimmer TV. They set the price range to be under 1000€. I have no clue what the size or the tech behind the TV should be nowadays. The viewers sit about 2.5m away from the screen i think and there can be sunlight coming from windows behind the TV into viewers eyes.

Now thats its your parents - maybe they will watch as much SD as HD? Sun behind the TV is no problem. Good allrounder is Panasonic TX-P42G30.

Nothing wrong with plasma. there's pro's and con's of both lcd/plasma. Having both (Panasonic's) Plasma's produce a much more natural picture with gorgeous blacks.

to make it more understandable for someone thats in his 50's [or make it understandable for a 6 year old] :
Plasma are like your old TV but they can display images in HD but you can't use them as a PC monitor or display static images on them, they life cycle is from 4 to 5 years depending on your settings and they are power hogs
Lcds well ... long life cycle , can be used as a PC monitor [or a console TV had plasmas and well had a bad exp with them], can display static images , no ghosting or burn ins , eco friendly in using power
plain short : want a TV like your old TV [power hog like there where ]that can display HD get a Plasma , want a digital TV that can act a a jack of all trades last long and can be later used as a console/TV extension get a LCD

I'd suggest to get my own TV.
http://www.lg.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-led-tv-47LE5300.jsp
47" (119cm)
100Hz (don't get fooled by plasma 600Hz )
LED Backlight, a real power saver!
4xHDMI, Full HD, native 24p support
Plays any content I fed it with.. plugged my 1TB external USB harddisk to the tv's USB and it played mkv (x264, 1080p), avi (divx, xvid), mp3, jpg ... basically anything I threw at it perfectly
...
Basically watching movies, playing games.. anything you can imagine is great with it.
Good blacks and it is perfect as a PC monitor and even for graphical stuff! (you just need to set it to PC mode for that -> basically no lag! )
-
And the menus are huge and very easily to navigate through, which should make it fairly easy for your parents to use it
Edit: Just checked the prices xD The TV is now 200-400 euro more expensive than when I bought it 1+ year ago I guess there are newer 47" by LG I'd suggest check them out! Just go to an electronic store of your choice and compare an LG LED with a Samsung LED

The above is not true (some of it was true like 7-8 years ago tho) - go to any serious hi-fi site and have a read. But your parents will be happy with a LCD as well, so no worry - just wanted you to have an reply.
For best image, handling of fast movement on screen and real blacks - see my choice. Plasma models still use a little more energy than new LCD´s - but its alot less than it was. I use my pana plasma for games all the time btw.
