act of valor 7/10

strange film... it kinda felt... independant... low budget, kinda arthouse type of film. it didnt feel like a cinematic experience or anything, BUT at the same time, whatever their budget was, it didnt look cheap (spotty acting aside) - and a lot of the cinematography and choreography was great. some of the camera work during the first mission was incredibly well done.

overall, i liked it. it had some great action, and the rah rah america fuck yeah stuff wasnt too intolerable for me (although during the briefing on the sub i think it was, the way the guy kept saying america reminded me of those christian pro american nutters for some reason..).

i look forward to the 1080 to see if the film holds up to a repeat viewing, but as far as a first viewing goes... was a lot better than i expected, and i quite enjoyed it.

first of all im not a malick fan and the movies i mentioned aren't my favorites. they're good and i merely just compared them. i didn't like tree of life. and we were talking about personal tastes of "good" movies. and that (after a short burst of conversation) came down to individual tastes. my taste in movies isn't smart or elitist and if i made it sound like that then lol... i'm sorry. my fav movies are harvey and arsenic and old lace and to me they're miles ahead on my top fifty list than godfather. i agree godfather is a good movie, but there are better ones ie. once upon a time in america. i prefer that to godfather. neither are perfect movies. but as you said godfather is a perfect movie and you're sticking by it, Nhiumewyn explained why lotr is up there as a perfect movie and his reasoning was sound. i agree with him. so tell me why you think godfather is the epitome of a perfect movie. i'll accept your reasons and i'll shut up. i'm not gonna judge you.

oh and scarface... Laughing

Chronicle - 4/10 - I did not like this movie. The script was weak (probably written by a sixteen year old), very predictable, CGI was average at best (especially after seeing Avengers), the "fuck yeah cool!!!" moments were irritating and the acting was really bad. Only the last twenty minutes or so are worth the trouble. I do not understand how or why this movie is praised.

chronicle 6.5/10

not bad. not especially amazing, but quite watchable. and hurrah, a handheld camera film that - thanks to a pretty clever story mechanic, actually works well as both capturing the 'personal' feel, but also works as a proper filmed experience (unlike other shitty attempts that measure their 'realism' by purposefully inserting as much over-the-top camera shaking they can shove into the experience.

took quite a while to get started, but i liked the last half or so was worth it. oh, and while the "take-offs" looked cheesy and fake as fuck, the flying sequence (im specifically thinking about when they were going through the clouds) was one of the best flying sequences ive seen. the way it was filmed (semi-realistic camera) with the use of effects, looked fantastic.

Chronicle - 7.5/10

Yeah seriously. My first impression was pretty bad... "what is this B movie cloverfield shit"
But when things start to happen you can't look away. Love the way they built up the viewers expectations around the superpower(s) Wink

also liked how they dont explain shit. but since i dont know if thats because of a lack of story telling/imagination, or because they genuinely CHOSE not to on PURPOSE to preserve the integrity of the story/film-making mechanics (ie from the POV of the teens), i cant give them total credit for it Razz

Just watched Chronicle as well - a 7/10 from me. While I am usually not a fan of the handheld camera style, this and Cloverfield I found pretty good. Any possibility of a sequel? since a lot of stuff was unanswered and left open.

Hope not, I think the answers and/or how he uncovers then would likely feel too contrived and silly, or just plain dull. It's the NOT knowing that's always the more appeeling... The movie doesnt really need a direct sequel I think... Maybe a new story based around someone else trying to find answers? Someone who saw the vids and want to get the power themselves?

I highly doubt there was any thought behind the "how" of the situation. It's just a simple way to get the cool shit started.

Haywire 7/10.

Gina Carano cant really act but the role wasnt that demanding in terms of acting anyway so she made it through alive but the supporting cast makes it an overall cool movie, especially Banderas is great.

Contraband - 7/10 - fun movie, decent story and action
Chronicle - 5/10 - had some moments but overall never really got really exciting. They first time they "float" reminded me aof a dream I used to have as a kid where you would just start floating hehe.

Dragon Eyes.

What the hell did I just watch...

No, seriously... WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH.

That had to be one of the most fucking random, nonsensical piece of shit I have ever seen.

4.5/10, for a tiny bit of descent fighting, and also keeping me amused while I wonder what the fuck is happening. Dumb dumb shitty waste of time. Avoid. Don't even watch it for the lulz.

Chronicle 5/10 ¨

ofc it's about teenagers that in the end uses the power against the bullies and has silly father issues thats steering the whole fucking movie. The movie was, well.. fun to watch, but very shortsighted and cliched.

edit: and yeah, they should have dropped the camera thing.

Chronicle - 7/10 - I enjoyed it but as originally said it was pretty stupid in places. Could have been more.

The Pianist - I've been watching this on the train. About half way through. Damn it's hard to watch. How could human beings be so evil? If you've not seen it, you should watch it. So far, half way through, it's 9/10

Chronicle (Director's cut) 7/10

I usually hate shakycam (Cloverfield:VOMIT) with a passion but the story more than makes up for it. I love it when everything goes completely bonkers in the end.

Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.
