Hi guys.
My sister old(OLD) sony vaio laptop broke. She basicly dropped it (like 1000000th time since last 10years she have it)
and it fuckd up windows.

It seems that everything is allright with the laptop itself, but just the hdd have now some bad sectors or something wrong on c:

it is a 40gb hdd. She had 6gb partition for C: and rest 32 for D:

When running xp installer, it shows C and D properly named and sized. I tried to formatting the C partition but it always gets stuck at 7%. Tried to deletind C partition and creating it in various sizes (hoping I might shake off broken sectors to "unpartitioned space" but no go. The isntaller drops at 11,12, 17, 20 % etc.)

The point is that I don't want to do anything with D: She have some data there and who knows. Maybe D: is working allright.
But since there is 7gb of space left according to xp installer, I've tried to install it on that partition but stupid installer wouldnt even let me do it explaining that its not a proper install partition.

I would just get the hdd out and fiddle with it on my pc but The damn tiny screws on this piece of shit are so fragile that I can't unscrew 2 of them. Its over 10yo so thats not a suprise at all.... and it was used when she got it then so someone was dong something with those screws since they are messed up.

So is there any way I could install xp on there, wihout taking out the hdd and withour loosing anything on D: ?

you should be able to get the data without installing anything.

KC, let me recommend a nice tool called SpinRite. It excels exactly at fixing problems like that. Try running it on the damaged HDD (you can boot it from CD or USB) and see if that helps - it probably will.

Unless you've got a Samsung Spinpoint, but that's not the case here with just 40GB Razz

It does work very well on especially older drives though so try that first Smile

wow it looks like windows95 defragmentation Laughing

Now performing level2 on partitionC.

I am unsure what level should I run?
Since it was stuck at 7% I restarted the spinrite and currently I am running level5 on C:
It again got stuck at 7% but after 40minutes its 7.07%.....

This will take weeks. Mabe I should do lower level?

Thanks guys Mad

So I've finally went with only level1 as just to see whats broken and after 5 hours it made it up to 30% and stopped there (it fixed couple of sectors along the way-looked good)
Nothing for another hours.
Suddenly the disk crapped itself totally.

Now it does clunky sounds and just doesn't work at all. The app doesn't even see it anymore.

Yeah I know. Its a goddamn old hdd so it was going to happen sooner or later but now I won't even recover anything from d: partition... Well, I wasn't even sure if it would be possible anyway but now I can't even try Wink

anyway. Thanks guys. Now I have to tell my sis bad news

yes she did Laughing I was wary of that no software might help with physical problem Wink

Btw.
What about using spinrite or hdd regenerator to .... regenetate my wd500 and 80gb seagate?
I was using wd 500gb for last 5 years and it still rocks but its very loud and can focus basicly only on one operation at time.
So I decided to install windows on totally separate 80gb seagate (sata disk. Idk... had it in my drawer, but I don't think it was used as much)
so that Windows opertaes on one disk and everything else on my western digital.

So now its double the noise. its quite terrible Laughing I need to backup my data anytime now.

Would it be wise to level5 that 80gb disk for the night? (only that system hdd because regenerating whole wd500 would take like 3 days)
Maybe after it, the disks would be a bit less noisy.

How does hdd regeneartor 2011 differentiate from spinrite?

It is a 5yo pc.... disks are fucking loud, temps are fucking high... I need to change it this summer. Ssd for system and wd black for games... and 680 would be nice Razz
