Looking at an Ivy + 680 at the moment. Memory prices have gone down - quad channel 16GB is cheaper than what I got these 6GB ffs! Laughing

So what motherboard would you suggest for Ivy Bridge (or Sandy really) taking into account quad channel memory and overclocking potential.

I am guessing the new Z77. I will need one PCI slot for the X-Fi.

Hmm some UEFI interfaces look hideous? Laughing

Leo, as you already own iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air you have discovered all the pleasures of hedonistic conformism. No wonder harsh reality of PC world confuses and shocks you now.

Therefore, I suggest you to simply buy a post PC device - an iMac.

Seriously though, LGA2011 Ivy Bridge CPUs will be out only in Q42012. And not sure if they are worth it.

I'd wait for post Ivy release (at least 1Q later) before starting to look into this further. It might not be as good as advertised to make upgrading a worthwhile investment.

What do you mean? Now I have a i7 930, so it surely is better. Now, if you mean it might not be better than Sandy Bridge, I don't see how, as basically it is the same architecture but smaller die.

2500k is still a winner, but if you want easy 5GHZ overclock get 2600k/2700k, 8 or 16gb of ram, whatever, doesn't cost a shit these days. Laughing

680 yes, you plan to buy one from KSP? They charge nearly 3000 shekel Laughing Only way to get a proper price is importing.

As for a motherboard, I'd say look at Asus first, then Gigabyte. Asrock, meh I don't like them nor MSI but you know what's good for ya. Cool Face

As for Gigabyte, from exploring and understanding their marketing you need to start off with the UD3 models and up. Usually the best UD3 which is UD3H, includes Virtu (not sure you want that) and then the UD4 models which should be more than sufficient for overclocking to 5GHZ. The UD5 and UD7 models are usually hideous and not sure you need those extra features they offer. However, I do think you should look at Asus first. There's a guide on how to select an Asus mobo somewhere over @ overclock.net. Pretty much sums up what models you should be looking at.

I am looking currently at Z77 boards. The Z77X-UD5H seems nice.

Ahhh they extended the H thing into the higher models as well. That means it has all display outputs and Virtu. No idea why they put blue heatsinks... the grey ones on the Z68 are so much better. The board looks nice other than that.

Better thermals, worse overclocking. Considering how cool SB already runs, that's not worth the premium, so 2500k remains best bang for buck Smile

In my experience Gigabyte's always had pretty bad quallity on their fans, so be on your guard!
Also pretty weird innovations... 5x 40mm fans on a GTX680 anyone? Very Happy

I haven't upgraded my ASUS Rampage Extreme II in some 2 years, and I'm not disappointed with it.

I have an ASUS board (don't remember what the name is exactly, one of the premium x58) and not that I'm disappointed with it, just the lack of anything remarkable about it. Certainly not worth the price. For example, my old nForce 4 was much better for me.

@Ron what CPU you have? 930? I also have a 1366 CPU and am getting tired of it. The SB/IB are really appealing to me.

I've never had any EVGA boards, what were they like? I've always tended to stick with one or two specific manufacturers.

I still have the 920 bloomfield stock @ 2.67Ghz OC@ 3.4 Ghz , never needed to upgrade, for most of my uses I never go pass 50% - 60% load, and that's only in high end applications, most of the time I never go past 5% - 10%

the only complaint about any asus motherboard i've ever had is that it used a particular intel chipset which meant you had to add 1 ram stick, boot it, let it post, shut it off, add 1 more, etc etc, until you had them all in for it to properly recognize them and honestly, that was on me for not being more informed before buying anyway.

Quite good to be honest, I remember it much more fondly than the current ASUS.

Provide reading material please.

http://tbreak.com/tech/2012/04/intel-ivy-bridge-motherboard-roundup/6/

Here they have the 3770K running at 4.7GHz @ 1.30v which seems ~ similar to SB.

Never had to do this. Scratch Head
Put three sticks in there, went to XMP on first boot.

yeah that was a very very old/late-model asus board and honestly i think that chipset's current state doesn't require that.

honestly, even back then you could look at that as a good thing, it in effect kind of forces you to do the process of elimination test for a bad memory module before you need to.

i'm just saying, that's the only thing i could ever pick on an asus board for and that was like early 2000s.
