Still debating weather to upgrade my pc as the one i have is still decent.
coreduo e7300 cpu.
p5pq pro motherboard (has error)
4 gigs of mem(wont run in dual mode though due to mem slot being fooked others work tho)
4890 1 gig gfx card.
That's me current rig, it's still decent imo, i don't want to upgrade my gfx card yet as it will run very well if i buy something like 16 gigs of mem.
So now that leaves me with wanting a new motherboard, new mem i want either 12 gigs or 16 gigs of mem?
A psu asno doub't I'll need a decent one i always buy shitty generic ones.
And a good cpu.
I'm looking at 500 max really, surly theres something about is near top line as I won't need a new gfx yet, I'll buy one at a later date

Uh... no. Buying 16GB of RAM isn't going to do jack shit for your gaming performance, mate. Really. I can pretty much guarantee that going from 4GB to 16GB won't yield a single frame per second increase. What you want to upgrade, more than anything, is the processor and GPU. £500 is great and will get you a wicked upgrade, pretty much along the lines of a 2500k/mobo/GTX560ti 448 and a Corsair PSU.

Doesn't work that way, you can't give people a link to your cart. Take a screenie and post that instead.

IMO? The 2600k is overkill, the 12GB of RAM is overkill and the Z77 board is overkill .. lol. I'm busy at the moment, otherwise I'd shop around for you, but I honestly do think you'd be making a mistake ignoring upgrading the GPU if you want to keep gaming. That extra RAM isn't going to do anything for you.

I just want an overkill rig now Sabin as then in the future as things get more powerful like they will I'll still be able to run then good
I don't want to upgrade my gfx card yet as i think It's still a decent card.

12GB of ram is NOT overkill for a 64 bit system, it just means you can be that much more lazy about closing programs before your overhead cuts into performance, it won't directly improve performance either, sabin is right about that, but by definition no amount of ram is "overkill".

An e7300 it ain't that old yet
Cheers for the tips Sabin, i dunno what to do atm yet, I'm trying to save for a new motorbike but i have to go in for my full test before i can buy a bigger motorbike,.
But the test is like 800 pounds and i have to revise my theory which i seriously cannot be assed.
Or i could buy this and keep saving for my bike but it will take longer.

If you say so So, Theescapist, how instances of Photoshop do you run simultaneously? Four? Five? What about Fruity Loops? Enjoy creating twenty different remixes at the same time..? All whilst editing a dozen videos in VEGAS, eh? Man, that 12GB really pays off there
I've never had to close a program in my life, except the DOS days. Still wrestling with those TSRs, fuckit? I had 4GB for the better part of half a decade and only went up to 8GB when I updated my rig last November -- but that's okay, you make your own decisions <3 It won't hurt to have 12GB+ though I do think it's a needless waste of money that could go towards more important things, because as much as it won't hurt -- it will NOT help. At all. Just wasted money
Oh and I almost forgot; Sandy Bridge is dual-channel, not triple, so that 3x4GB Corsair kit isn't exactly optimal. Grab an equivalent dual-channel one =)

more overhead room is not a bad thing sabin, shit i admit my main reason was i usually run my MC server with a minimum of 4GB but at the same time, ram is still cheap ain't it? i haven't checked and don't plan to, just guessing based on him wanting to get a large amount.
however, do not spend money on extra ram you could spend elsewhere, even while cheap lately it's not directly going to wind up giving you any extra performance, you'll love it if you multi box your games though honestly is a good reason and the rest can keep up, but seriously if it comes down to it, get a better of something else, you don't want to have 4GB, nobody has an excuse to have 4GB these days, unless it's on your phone, aim for 8GB average, if you really have a huge wad to blow consider 12-16GB or more.
one thing i will add though, when vuze starts hash checking, i couldn't tell you even if i had a game with pretty good graphics going, i couldn't notice the slowdown from vuze eating a ton of ram all at once, it's hardly what i'd consider worth it if it meant the difference between a 570 and a 670 of course though.

Thanks for pointing that out mate.
But everytime in the past i had added more mem it has improved my computer alot.
I might get 8 gig of mem dunno, but mem isn't hardly expensive these days so might get 12

if you're already at or nearing your overhead, that's the only time ram will improve performance, just budget around the rest and use leftover money for the ram.

12GB certainly isn't overkill for a workstation but for a PC that's solely being used for gaming it is. However, it's all irrelevant as memory doesn't cost an arm and a leg like it used to (e.g £40 for 8GB or £90 for 16GB or even 32GB for £160).
Random I know but for memory consumption laughs, open a 400 MB NASA .png in 64-bit Photoshop ( Google world.topo.bathy.200401.3x21600x21600.C1.png ), select a portion of that image and apply the Alien Skin Bokeh filter with a zoom level of 3200% and watch it munch 7.5 GB RAM. Including OS overheads and minor programs running, that's 60% of my 16GB.
If you then load 2 x virtual machines, combined with Photoshop, that's nearly 90% of 16GB installed memory by executing 3 tasks.

I've got 16GB of RAM and that's a HUGE overkill. Only reason I bought so much of it was because it was dirt cheap. 8GB cost me like 350SEK which is like 5 packs of smokes.
Edit:
Yes, I convert money into cigarettes...prison style! >.<

yes, but sabin is not necessarily wrong, it's just that so many people are already at their overhead running win 7 64 bit, you will be better off buying a better video card when upgrade time comes, but at the same time you've no excuse to have less than 12GB in this day and age.

Getting that kind of a CPU and RAM with such a GPU is a waste of money. Better save it and do it later when you can do it all at once, because the CPU will be completely wasted (unless you play games at 1280x1024, then it might just have something to do other than idling).

That's aside from the fact that dropping down to a 2500K will free up a fair chunk of cash while you don't really lose performance.

And ditch the 2600 for an 2500k. At least if you're not planning to encode videos, render 3d models and photoshop while playing a game. If not, HT is pretty useless for you.
8GB is more than enough even though you'll get minor speed increase when games are loading (such as BF3).

I also got 16GB of RAM and don't agree at all with comments saying it's overkill. If you have Win7 x64, and you should, that puts RAM to good use you will notice that everything works just so much better, snappier, more fluid, with 16GB instead of 8.
And best part is you don't even need to do anything special or demanding to use up all that RAM, because Win7 has one great great feature called caching. Caching is when stuff you use often gets loaded into RAM, so next time you start app/game it takes just a split second to load.
Here's how it looks on my machine.
Right now idling and typing this post, doing basically nothing, yet 14+GB of RAM is in use, because earlier I played some games, used some apps which are now cached in RAM. So later when I resume these games/apps they will load in seconds without even need to access HDD. And this is just one of many examples why 16GB ram is so amazing
