Gabe bought Jobs knifes just before he died. Tim thought would be a nice idea to take them at valve and see for himself valve's working environment of flat management.

Gabe Newell denies meeting with Tim Cook.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/344529/gabe-newell-valve-didnt-meet-with-apple/
Quote: | "We actually, we all sent mail to each other, going, 'Who's Tim Cook meeting with? Is he meeting with you? I'm not meeting with Tim Cook.' So we're... it's one of those rumours that was stated so factually that we were actually confused," said the Valve boss.
"No one here was meeting with Tim Cook or with anybody at Apple that day. I wish we were! We have a long list of things we'd love to see Apple do to support games and gaming better. But no, we didn't meet with Tim Cook. He seems like a smart guy, but I've never actually met him." Well that's that then. |

I wonder why denials from Valve always take quite a few days to be issued and not immediately to kill speculation asap. I guess other companies might do that too, just something I noticed with Valve particularly because there were at least two of those incidents (this one and the rumored console) in short succession.

So, just a rumor stated as a fact to generate traffic , just as I expected from "cultofmac".
BTW, Steam to not become a social network: http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/4/20/2961883/dota-2-will-be-free-to-play-with-a-twist
Quote: | "So when somebody from the general business press says a social network, they generally mean are you going to have a website that looks like Facebook.
"If I had to talk about a model, it would be more about how gamers can benefit from a collective action of all the other gamers and there are a bunch of different ways that can occur, whether from things that look like traditional social networking notifications to higher-value activities. As far as I know, Facebook doesn't have the ability for people to fundamentally modify or edit the underlying Facebook experience."
Newell described his vision of a gaming social network as allowing Valve to make people as valuable as possible.
"It really is more a legacy of John Carmack's way of thinking about things than it is social networking," he said.
"It's just that now we have the horsepower and the experience in the gaming community to try and figure out how all these experiences get knit together in a way that's valuable." |

Just read through that handbook. Wow. Valve must be an amazing company to work for. I've never heard of a company with such attitude towards work and employees, it's just awesome. I mean you can choose what to work on yourself, no one is forcing you to work on a certain project! That's just great.

It works for smaller companies where you know the exact quality of worker working for you.
Would never work for a larger company though. Your average person does not strive to achieve anything unless you have typical management slave driving.

Valve Updates Steam's Account Policy, You Can Now Access Your Games While Banned
Quote: | There was a flurry of comments and criticisms about Steam after news broke that Electronic Arts updated their Origin account policy back in early March of this year, enabling banned users to access their games in offline mode.
A lot of gamers were questioning why it wasn't possible to access games in offline mode in Steam while an account was suspended or banned, but the real news is that you already can, Valve just never told anyone. What's more? Your games aren't limited to offline mode.
While Valve doesn't have a lot of legal lingo surrounding the use of their digital distribution service, they do make it known in the subscriber agreement consent form...
Quote: | Valve may terminate your Account or a particular Subscription for any conduct or activity that Valve believes is illegal, constitutes a Cheat, or which otherwise negatively affects the enjoyment of Steam by other Subscribers. |
One user put that clause to the test and was aptly banned, however, he later found out that he wasn't completely blocked out of accessing his games because of a recent policy update in Steam for account access, which has now been deemed as "account locking" instead of "account banning". According to a Steam volunteer moderator, he makes it clear that...
Quote: | Steam support stopped disabling Steam accounts a bit more than two months ago. This has been replaced with "account locking": you still have access to your games, but some restrictions are applied to your account (no trading, no cd key activation, no purchase allowed, etc.). |

Valve to announce new title at E3 with the numbr "3" in it
Quote: | “I don’t suppose it would ease your wrath if I told you we’re announcing all your favorite things at E3 2012?” - Gabe Newell
The people at reddit sent an email to Newell, asking him to elaborate. His response? “I can see how the wording caused some confusion there. Yes, we are announcing something with a three in it.” We all know that Valve loves to tease their fans, but this is just too much. So many questions can be asked from this statement, and it could apply to so many games: Half Life 3, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, even Team Fortress 3. But does this statement mean only one “three”-related game?
Two websites have emerged: atramental-plateau.com, and black-aperture.com. The “Atramental-plateau” website shows Half Life’s Black Mesa logo on a black background, and highlighting the black text underneath the logo reveals “E3 2012.” The “black-aperture” website shows only “…/3.” |

Gabe finally talks about "HL3": http://kotaku.com/5903627/gabe-newell-updates-interviewer-on-the-status-of-wink-wink-ricochet-2
Quote: | "In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance, we end up changing our minds as we're going through and developing stuff, so as we're thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you're saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we'd like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2. The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we're going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what's happening next."
Probed further by the hosts on current staffing levels for the project and whether there's been a slowdown on the project, Newell replies "No, everybody who has worked on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2 [laughs]." |
Obviously, replace, Ricochet 2 with EP3/HL3. I guess the project has been restarted a few times (nothing out of the ordinary, Portal 2 was restarted once, and TF2 something like 4 times..) and they are experimenting with ideas like what Gabe called once "singleplayer plus".
