Windows decided to catch a virus, even with my impenetrable AV and firewall. SMART HDD thingy. That dirty fucker died hard, but still, all of my shortcuts are gone, the computer's gone haywire, running like a piece of shit.
I hate installing Windows on my machine. Every single time it takes months only to grow the guts to do it, now I'm faced with the fact. I HATE THIS!
Well, at least I now have the chance to try Windows 8 Laughing.

Wink

I used all the fixes I could find, still nothing. Dozens of restarts, both hard and soft.

That would mean new hardware, and a change of sexual orientation (I am presuming) my solution needs neither.

Still puzzles me how people get viruses so easily, I haven't had a virus scanner installed in a decade (they won't stop new malware anyway) Razz

Install windows updates
Don't go to dodgy sites
Don't accept things you don't know what is/enter links from IMing.
Don't get free Viagra.. and no you didn't win the lottery or a US greencard etc.

Common sense = no viruses Smile

Add to that:
- Don't use Internet Explorer
- Don't allow Java to just randomly execute (in fact, don't let any browser plugin just execute at will really)

I really haven't even had a single trace of spyware on my PC in the past decade, never even got Blaster which is probably the one I've seen affect computers around me the most Smile

Does help that I don't use any of the popular browser targets of course (Opera), although I don't think it's anywhere near as vulnerable as the other unpopular beast, Safari (which in turn is more vulnerable than its cousin Chrome because Apple are such lazy shits).

Well, a Java runtime app popped out of nowhere when I was browsing a local news site, I knew the moment that icon popped in the tray that means trouble, I instantly downloaded MalwareBytes and the fix (just seconds before all of the functions were disabled and SMART HDD popped on the screen, fucking up everything). But it wasn't enough. I never used IE for browsing more than 5 minutes :/. THOUGH I was using Safari when I picked up the malware (shame on me Crying or Very sad, but I liked the quick dial and reading list).
And this was a first infection for me since using Windows ME Cool Face.

Yay, finally finished with the Windows 8 installation. It looks great imo, I like the interface Very Happy. Let's see if the performance is at least on par with W7.

also use an adblocker , make sure to run bare minimum of browser plugins and addons.

dont download executables, even when trusted, if you really have to , use virustotal.com etc
