Price aside, I do believe Alienware has the right idea with their X51. It's a fully-configured PC with standard components in a console-alike small form factor case. The downside (except the price, which is typical Alienware bullshit; £1000) is the substandard GPU and the 330W external PSU. The GTX555 is pretty cruddy as far as PC gaming goes - my wife has the GT555M in her laptop and it's... just...ergh - but the machine only has a 330W PSU which limits upgrade options. Still, I gotta hand it to 'em, it's a very nice device.

Steam Box comfirmed:

There’s this one Valve veteran who was definitively too chatty in the past. His name is Greg Coomer (www.valvesoftware.com/company/people.html), he’s a product designer and leading the SteamBox-team, which is pretty unspectacular in size with just 5-10 people working on it. Now, Greg sometimes tweets interesting stuff:

(in a non-chronological order)

Date: 22 Oct 2011
Link: twitter.com/#!/gregcoomer/status/127560965821693952
Tweet: “What I'm working on: t.co/jDLQnxvl”
Note: Read the article and especially Gabe’s statements. It’s obviously about a possible Valve console.

Date: 14 Oct 2011
Link: twitter.com/#!/gregcoomer/status/124651468501434371
Tweet: “Building a mini-ITX form factor PC is hard. Even things like wiring the power supply are not standard or straightforward.”
Note: Well …

Date: 3 Nov 2011
Link: twitter.com/#!/gregcoomer/media/slideshow?url=pic.twitter.com%2FuVdGOtZq

Tweet: “Built this tiny PC. i7 quad core, 8GB ram, Zotac Z-68 mobo w/ onnboard Nvidia mobile gfx. Runs Portal 2 FAST.”
Note: This is the demo unit they used to demo the Big-Picture-Mode to possible hardware partners at CES 2012. This specification DOES NOT necessarily reflect what’s going to be used as the “baseline” specification for the final product(s). (contrary to Joshes’ story)

That’s just a snippet of all the information I’ve gathered about this project. However, I think these tweets pretty much confirm that Valve is actually working on a console (-like PC).

You may take screenshots of the tweets – just in case they get pulled.

You can already make your very own steam box easily in these steps

1. Install Steam on your pc
2. ???
3. PROFIT

Sure, it's an HTPC with Steam that you can build on your own, but one could argue the iPad would fail to meet success as it was just a touch based device that can browse the Internet, it's not like we didn't have devices like this before.

Good, I hope this is true. Microsofts console has practically ruined the Console, and PC gaming market.

How would the steam box change anything, though?

It's basically just a custom computer in a small and compact format, just like the shit Alienware's trying to pull now.

On the other hand we'd probably end up with yet another tv-gamepad-console. I don't' know what to think honestly. Probably it's better to wait to see if the rumors are true and if they are what kind of console/pc are they planning.

No one needs to worry about it for now if they're working on it at the same pace as they're working on EP3/HL3. Laughing

I think they should focus on how to make a gaming os on pc rather a gaming console. Consoles still use the same joysticks, stale hardware until a new console comes out.

Take the efficiency of a console os and bring it to pc. Steamos Laughing

Agreed. When did the 4870 and E7200 come out? 2008? They both lasted me until 2011 quite satisfactorily for the most part. Some issues with poorly optimised games from time to time, but on the whole a VERY impressive piece of kit that kept me gaming.

+1
I bought my last upgrade in 2007 (wow, that really is ages ago compared to how often I updated my rig earlier...), and I only gave up on gaming on my PC like 6 months ago because games wouldn't run anymore. I definitely got my money up of that PC for once Very Happy
Actually it's kind of sad, because it shows how PC gaming stagnated in that time... Sad But I have the feeling that a lot of developers are going back to PC, especially with a heavy drive from indie devs.

I was running on a 4200+ and 9600GT for a long long time. Played DA:O/Witcher/Far Cry 2 etc on that beast of a machine. It wasn't until Two Worlds 2 came out, that I finally upgraded Laughing

My current spec is a e7500@3.3Ghz, 6Gb DDR2 RAM, ATI 5870 VaporX 1Gb.

And I can play absolutely everything at 1920x1080 at max detail EXCEPT the Witcher 2, which I could play at ultra, but the FPS is a little offputting Laughing

Even Skyrim seems to run at 60fps more or less.

I don't honestly see the point of upgrading either my card or cpu. Well.. ok, I would probably enjoy the extra number crunching speed I suppose...

That's better Laughing

And that's my point I suppose, it's an older rig, and because of derpy consoles, the decent video cards out now are woefully underused.

Hey.. maybe if we get the Steam-o-Matic console, we can get games exclusively for it with top end graphics and all...

If Valve were making their console it would be great if it they ran games on custom flavor of Linux or something. First, they could make Steam for Linux like they did for Mac, and if enough games would run on Linux I would have no reason to keep Windows as my main OS and could switch to Linux completely without resorting to virtual machine running Debian Linux, where I do my work everything else beside video games... Guess it will never happen Sad
