Posted: Sat, 3rd Mar 2012 19:48 Post subject: Valve May be Working on Secret "Steam Box" Console |
|
 |
Quote: | It’s a rumor right now, but if it turns out to be true, it could be an earthquake for the entire video game industry. Word is that Valve is seriously considering getting into the hardware business with a “Steam Box” console that could pose a direct threat to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
The Verge has the story, and says that they’re not only working on such hardware, but they plan to make Steam “the center of an open gaming universe that mirrors what Google has done with Android.”
Valve head Gabe Newell recently told Penny Arcade “”Well, if we have to sell hardware we will” and followed that up with “We’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do [hardware]. We think it’s important enough that if that’s what we end up having to do, then that’s what we end up having to do.” Meaning they might have someone else build the box for them, but the system would run Steam, and if this all turns out to be true, it could change the entire industry. |

If this turns out to be true this would be a major kick up the ass for Sony and Microsoft and i expect Steam to be the winner in all.
They would use hardware that is actually good of great compared to there crap that is inside the ps3 and 360 considering the type of hardware that is available for them to use(cost cutting).
Please move mods to the appropriate section as i didn't know which part of the humps to put it in.
Thanks

Heh...
See, I wrote and then deleted a post saying that it would never work.
But it might. Everyone gets sick of console ports that don't use the PC's capabilities properly, right? Well, this would give developers a stable baseline for minimum specs. And if it's true that they're just designing the hardware spec, with Alienware and others producing it, then if they get the right partners, it could spread without anyone realising it. Everyone laughs at Alienware, but what about Dell? HP? Acer? These are the PCs that families buy, and if they're a decent baseline technologially, then it could massively improve PC gaming. Of course, you'd need developers and publishers to take advantage of it, but still...
If Valve produce and sell the hardware themselves, it's harder, but still not impossible, to do much the same thing.
Also, whatever else, I can see Valve making a controller that rivals Nintendo for comfort and ingenuity.

To clarify I'm not saying Valve isn't working on it, I'm saying the "exclusive reveal's" author doesn't know shit and is simply fishing hits with something that if he's lucky might even turn out to be true.
Of course I could be wrong (according to his twitter he has seen more than he has shared) but this is my opinion for now..
And if anyone can make it happen, of course it's Valve.

What OS would that hardware run? Windows, MacOS or something custom? If its Win or Mac, licencing costs would be too much, I think. And a custom OS would be a gigantic effort. Plus, a new platform to pitch to VG manufacturers, they hate 3 platform right now as it is. If it's gonna run on Windows, do you think Microsoft would be OK with that? And who the fuck uses macs..
This isn't happening, I don't think.
Asus, B550, 3700X, 3060, 32GB.

SteamOS. Or GabeOS. Or ValveOS (which sounds badass ). Or maybe BlackMesaOS.
The guys there have the ability to build an OS and keep it running, with weekly updates.

Windows obviously:

Yeah but yet another platform? Developers won't be happy. Nor will the publishers. EA is already making its own platform - delivery only, but still, its segregating. What's next? 10 Console manufacturers?
I dunno, that article is throwing lots of numbers and rumors, it might be just some sort of mockery, like OnLive or something. They could sell pre-made gaming PCs, but still the OS thing... Dunno.
// Edit
If this is true, a Wndows based platform, don't you think Microsoft would start giving them shit, sooner or later? XBox and all. I mean I know they don't give a fuck about GFW(L), but if it starts to take the cake from XBox..what happens then?

No because unupgradable means single hardware so developers can take advantage of the single SKU

The article concludes:
Quote: | One thing is for sure, however: if these rumors turn out to be correct, there could be a whole new kind of battle for control of your living room happening in the near future. Of course, much of this is pieced together from a variety of sources, and there could be moving parts which we can't see. Some of this information could change. |
So much for trusting their "exclusive sources"

Yes.. and then be out of date within a year, massively stagnating progression and development. Just like consoles have, something we all rant and rave about on a daily basis. |
Console have kept up with PC quite well (except, maybe, in memory area).
