Once upon a time there were a lot of issues with 64bit gaming, lot of compatibility issues in general, but this has long since passed. I've been using 64bit since around 2005 or so and I wouldn't go back to x86, not now. The only issues you might run into would be REALLY old games, but those are few and far between I guess.

64 is the right choice.
Only game I've had problems getting to run was Discworld Noir, and it just took a bit of time to get running properly.

Due to how Windows Vista and 7 handles x86 32bit theres no issue with those games or programs on a 64bit platform.
The issues that you might experience with older games stems from DEP or Data Execution Prevention, which can be turned off on a per program basis - it should not be turned off entirely as it protects your computer from programs that wants to write to memory adresses where they should not be writing ie malware.
If the application is 16 bit however, you want to look at virtualbox, vmware or dosbox.

Since GPUs nowadays spot 1 or 2 GB of VRAM (subtracting that amount of address space from your RAM, making only 2 to 3 GB of RAM usable), going with a 32bit operation system borderlines insanity.
Stick with 64bit

today gaming with today games is better with 64 bits, in terms of performance. Games are getting more tested on this platforms, and large adress aware works better on 64 bit when needed/wanted.
most problems may come with old but not so old games, maybe around w95 times, but that is also the case in some w7 32 bits scenarios. Older than that, works fine on emulators.
i may stick to 32 tough if i had less than 4 gigs and didnt plan to go for more ram, otherwise go for 64

The only real issue that I know of is that you can't easily load unsigned drivers. But that has nothing to do with gaming.

That's false.
The only games that you will gain a noticeable performance boost are the ones exclusive for PC with huge amounts of data (and it will be hard as fuck to found games that will use that).

As you can see, only Half Life 2 with all the high resolution mods.
TLDR; No perfomance boost on games without mods.

And I guess the OS itself won't benefit from a 64-bit OS and 6-12GB RAM in addition to the console port game.

Stick to 64-bit Windows. 64-bit CPUs are mainstream for like five years and it's 2012. for frack's sake.

32 is dead, been dead last 5 years, what question is this.. even with 2gb ram you got 64 bit..
this is hardly about gaming, its just general

He asked about games.
OS will be way better with 64-BIT with 6~12gb RAM (multitasking like a baddass).
Again, dont expect a perfomance gain in GAMES. (thanks consoles for that) |
orly?
As you may or may not know, gaemz run in the OS. If the OS hard pressed for memory and starts swapping, good luck playing on it. Performance in the OS means improved gaming experience.

Why are you being sarcastic?
If you gonna throw that 64bit will improve significant your gaming performance, please, show to us!
Everytime that i search on the subject, i never see a significant perfomance boost.

I'm a big fan of 64 bit OS (being a computer science student), but please dont make that assumption.
Stop thinking that narrow, with that view that if it improves OS, it will improve your gaming (it doest not work that way).
For the current generation, you wont need more than 3gb of ram to play every single release.
Found a link about Witcher 2.

To answer his question, for gaming you wont find a difference.
It's better to stick with x64 if you use programs that need to alocate huge amounts of data (Photoshop / Any dev studio / World of Warcraft / Skyrim with mods).

Those tests are native 64-bit binary of Crysis. Crysis is known to have an unoptimized 64-bit executable (along with almost equally unoptimized 32 bit version as well ).
You still don't get it. Games are indirectly boosted by the extra available RAM.
Oh but them benchmark sitez fortmatz Win7 and don't install anything and see no performance gainz... Oh look, XP even haz moar FPS in 32-bit XP omg. Vista and 7 suck for gaeming, XP ftw!
Come on...

?
How about you look at all my posts. No, you probably won't feel any gain from 8GB to 12GB. But you would, from ~3.2 to 6 or more, especially with Windows 7 and software running in the background.
