It is hilarious, really what fuss they make about this demo. Because the socalled beta is really only a demo of the game, which will come out for everyone sooner or later. Too bad for the buyers of the CE, believing they'd get a real beta-test of the full game.
I have reached a point where there is nothing more to do in the demo, but I really like the game and cant wait for the full game to be released. I'll wait for reviews of the whole game, but I will most certainly buy it. |
Could you please provide a bit more in depth review?
I'm pretty confident about everything, except the combat. How is it? Is timing attacks still important? Is it deep enough or hack 'n' slash? |
It's difficult to say at this point since I dont have had the chance to upgrade any significant skills in swordfighting or anything else. Right now it seems like a simple hack&slash, and pretty dull. Animals f.e. are pretty easy to kill, by just spawning rightclick, but I've come across some bigger more difficult enemies, which use pretty specialized techniques, so I really think it will become more fun once you get the proper skills. I dont want to judge at this point, because I believe there are lot of new things to explore in this area. I smell innovation.
The demo does not allow for alot, actually, but the landscapes and grafics are really unique and beautiful (for my taste) the gameplay seems solid enough, (I've not encountered any bugs, if you dont count the growing foliage, and the popping up of objects) The NPCs are nicely integrated in the game, like always with PB, you can hear them talk about different subjects, and go about their business. I can guess the factions already, and that is cool.
Some things were obviously dumbed down (Fast-travel, jumping, swimming, eating etc.), but that was to be expected, as PB wants to connect to the console marked (as it seems).

TSearch or similar worked to increase those "glory" points (and gold) enough to upgrade everything that was available but even so the trainers in the beginning area only know some skills so you don't do that much better albeit fencing improves noticeable with even the basic skills.
(And I guess you can't acquire that item to learn lockpicking since it's at the other side of the map.)
EDIT: Also there's four (1, 2, 3, 4 named.) DLC references in the exe file, I can't see anything in real detail but it might be islands.
(Hex editor with a search for Unlock_ should show them, can see all console commands and a lot of other stuff, full bestiary, location names, items, bosses and that and there's references to mini-games so I guess lockpicking might be one of them.)
EDIT: Three DLC actually, all of which seems quest related.

Sorry, my bad, it's not acceleration per se, it's negative acceleration. Dampening. The fuck is this doing in my PC game, PB?!

X axis sensitivity is WAY up (had to lower it on my mouse control) whereas Y axis is too low. I was confused about that too.

I was shocked to see there was no dodge of any kind, just a r-click "parry" move which works against fauna but not humans, every single human kicked the shit out of me without so much as breaking a sweat -- and, worse, they have that kick move which disrupts your parry and allows them a free stab in the gut. Thanks >_> Perhaps later in the game you learn to stop being such a pansy cretin, despite the fact that you personally took down a fucking TITAN in the previous game, but I gave up on the beta anyhow.
I will of course grab the ISOdemo and, if it lives up the standard of Risen, will buy it down the line.. but the beta didn't leave me feeling too pleased. Not to mention the visuals most certainly didn't justify the shitty performance I got once I hit the pirate isle; 45fps on average. You're welcome though, at least you got a chance to check it out =) There's potential, sure, but I don't quite think it will match Risen.

I was so hyped for this game, I'm literally scared to go back in and face more potential disappointments. I want to bury my head in the sand. This is my most anticipated game of 2012 man ...

Wrong.
It lost momentum later though in the final parts of the game.

I thought it was dull and surprise hits like divinity II caught my attention with more dynamic fighting system and better story but anyways i didnt and wont play the demo but i hope that risen II might be better since they try to do something different? But i dont think it will happen though

Funny, I had a good time with the combat, and never had to glitch animals in order to slay them. Just time the dodges right, and then they're right near you and ready to be attacked, for a while.

I remember coming to blows with Epsilon and others over the combat in Risen and how much I hated having to fight those god damned boars (and other wildlife) due to the cheating BS... but I got over it in the end, got stronger, learned more combat skills, got MUCH better at timing dodges (... animals still locked and tracked you sometimes, grr) and I ended up loving Risen in the end. Great fun. I'm just wondering why a direct sequel has you playing a watered-down pansy with no talent and no standing, despite the fact that you took down a TITAN SINGLE-HANDEDLY.
Thus the downside to sequels. How do you make one, taking into account previous accomplishments, and without disrupting the balance?
