I have this 500gb WD hdd. Its like 3 or 4 years old. I have it in 3 partitions 20/300/100
Its really loud. and makes plenty of cracking noises(it always did as my every hdd but its cracking even when opening bmp images or so)

Defragmentation(win7) doesnt do anything else. I could just format it but I Don't have any other hdd to move my files temporarly.

Any way to refresh it, repair it a little? I am not buying anything for this pc. I am planning on doing whole new powerfull rig, but not just yet as I am playing on my 360 mainly anyway

The only real way to revive a dead HD, and it's not even a promise is sticking it in the freezer for a few hours then trying to quickly get the files off.

If you're planning on building a whole new system why not just order the HD ahead of time, xfer the files over and just use it till you get the new system?

They are still to expensive and besides, making new system is still to far for me. Like whole year or so.
But I will do that. As soon as prices will drop, I will get 2TB black WD.

Freezer?!Razz sounds rather dangerous if You ask me. And I don't have anywhere to copy all those files

That drive simply has mechanical wear, weaker electro-magnets and is ready to go for recycling. The freezer trick may work (works in what, 10% of the cases of dead drives?). I'd try to get the files off of it as soon as possible any way you can since it's dying. Forget trying to get it back into a normal-use situation, it will be so unreliable that you'd have better odds in a casino.

Allright. Will get some 8,5discs and burn all important stuff. I have old 80gb drive for additional backup but its also "old"
thanks. Actually I think, I knew that its dying etc. I was just hoping for something:P

I will perform magickal freezer trick after I get new hdd. Just to check does it work.

I usually break my old hdds to get the neomagnets out. Almost broke my finger with 2 of those:lol:

And only way I upgrade next time , I will be sure to get 40 or 80 ssd for system partition and 1 or 2tb wd cavair black on sata3 for everything else.
