in market for new 3d tv. Now, I can grab 3d movies (30gb+), but what device do I need to play them back? Blu-Ray Player? I dont have PS3 or Xbox360. Sadly just a Wii and Xbox1 (both chipped).
I want to buy tv like this with passive glasses (movie theater ones)
http://www.amazon.com/LG-Infinia-55LW5600-55-Inch-LED-LCD/dp/B004OOVIHW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1328194020&sr=1-1
But, then when I have a 3d movie on my HD, then what should I match that tv with to play it back to? I think I can use this internal bluray 3d player/writer by connecting tv to pc and just play it from the bluray writer- I would need 25ft hdmi cables from my desktop to reach tv to connect I guess:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136241
then buy some verb rewriteable bluray discs...
I think this combo will work fine.

you download 3d movie
most tvs are now smart tvs
plug in usb drive with the movie
run the movie and then select the 3d option
it's that easy. you only need a bluray player for a real legit bluray 3d movie. other than that, you don't need it at all.

I don't think TVs can deal with disc images. One possible option would be to "unpack" the image on an external HDD, but I don't think TVs can handle that either. So I guess in that case you'll be limited to Half-SBS movies.
For full bluray playback you'll either have to get a player or use a PC with a mounted bluray image.

I don't mean to offend, but what is this fascination with 3D-TV's? I think it's all a big scam. When you watch 3D cinema it all looks like distant moving silhouettes, nothing practically is visually impressive (apart from maybe one of the intros I saw where a blue ball actually felt as if it was going out into the audience). I haven't tried the non-glasses solution, but seen too many 3d movies now to draw the conclusion that it's one big "meh".
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

So what is it then?
Can I use a USB External HD and connect it to TV and it will play IMAGE from HD? I dont think so. But that would be best way.
or...Do I need a Blu-Ray Player (I would use the internal one in my PC) and then just play it from PC and have it connected to tv via HDMI <<I think this method will work

OK, Then I wont bother buying a Bluray burner/player then if I can just mount it and the images will be played in 3d. I thought for some reason in order for it to play back in 3d, it must be played on a blurray player that supports 3 playback. Maybe not? I dont need a bluray player/burner since they will all be in image file to begin with. This would be most ideal setup as I would only have to buy a HDMI cable then (along with 3d tv).

I have an LG Infinia TV. Download a 3D movie in mkv format, put on external HDD, play with LGs own mediaplayer. Easy as that.

It depends on what movie you watch and what you expect. Try watching Avatar on a 50" LED TV, the difference between 3D and 2D is night and day. It's about depth, not shit jumping out at you like some brands tend to advertise. Sadly, there are very, very few movies which do 3D right. Usually 3D is just an afterthought, so the effect is pretty much useless. A movie needs to be designed for 3D from the beginning imo.

I've bought a Samsung 40" D7000 LED TV not all that long ago. 3D (when it's done right) is amazing. It's just a shame that most are conversions and look pants including Transformers 3. Sorry but the 3D in that was terrible. Avatar is the best out there at the moment for 3D I feel.
Usually if I leech a film and it's something that I want to keep, I'll burn it to 50 GB bluray or 25 if I can get away with it Frozen Planet for example. In fact I'm more now into just getting Bluray images only. I don't mind waiting a while longer for them to appear.
If anyone is using the Samsung Smart TV's ditch that AllShare program. It's terrible. I've got 3 hard drives + one external drive with movies spread out on them. Now I've found if a folder gets bigger than 100 GB it crashes the program all of the time. So after getting annoyed again with it I found a program called Mezzmo. It simply works and does not crash when it's sorting out your films ! Hope this help someone.

I personally think you're fucking idiots for pissing money away on crap like 3D TV, unless you don't need glasses for it, it's fucking useless.

OK, so it appears I can connect a USB drive and TV will play with its own player. I also believe I can play it from PC connected via HDMI. However, I cant confirm what app on PC will play video in 3d and make sure it shows up on tv in 3D. I guess any app on PC that supports 3d should send 3d signal via HDMI. I rather just use HDMI cables instead of using external drive.

Just use something like PowerDVD. Personally I've not used it for the 3D as I just burn the bluray image.

Yup I already checked out that thread - thanks! I already grabbed the Arcsoft one along with powerDvd. So thats good I have several options. Play on PC and connect via HDMI or use external USB drive and play using TV built in media player. Ill prob end up trying both methods.
I figure since I am buying a new HDTV, might as well get 3D anyways. I always prefer watching movies in 3D over 2D so this will be worth it. Especially since passive mode allows normal light weight glasses just like movies.

buy a bluray burner and brun the isos on bluray and play through your ps3 ... easy and best quality ... I have to say I was really impressed with the new Transformers 3d bluray ... and I really find funny when people hate on 3d, like someone is making them use it.
fuck ...

yea passive is really not the way to go ... every single one I tried sucked and was nowhere near the active ... I agree that 3d is somewhat of a challenge in setting up, positioning, finding the right devices and content ...but when you get it right - its all out awesome ...
fuck ...

I've been able to compare my passive LG TV (not top class) to one of the top class active 3D Philips TVs, the resolution difference is realy not that big. Being able to use lightweight 2 euro glasses alone is a major pro for passive 3D. Active shutter isn't very comfortable, I get burning eyes after an hour, it's not a very pleasent watch.

Avatar is the only 3D Movie i've watched that used depth correctly. It wasn't just random silhouettes. (Which is what you get when they apply 3D after the fact) When the film is actually filmed /in/ 3D then you get real depth. While Avatar as a movie itself is mediocre - If you watch it in 3D it definatly has a 'wow' factor. It's like you are actually there in real life. Not much in Avatar even 'pops out'.

I've played the 3DS and I don't get a 'wow' factor at all. It's no better then a movie with 3D thrown in after the fact. Avatar truly felt real. The only limiting factor was not being able to 'focus' on anything one wanted to, but that is what a movie is about. A director is showing his perspective. In the end, avatar still had a true depth to it. It wasn't like you had front plane A, middle plane B, and far plane C. There was a real and infinite depth to every object in the scene.
