IMO it would be nice if they standardised something like this and offered upgradeable parts that slot right on in. It would work well for dumb people and those who have no clue but only want a PC for games. Kind of like what consoles should do so they aren't continually left in the dark ages 1-2 years after each cycle.

It would also be great for playing Dolphin/PS2 games on the TV @ a higher res with a controller of your choice

Why would it only work for dumb people? A bit of standardiaztion of HW and drivers would be essential to get some optimized games. When I see what a 6-7 year old console can still pull off due to heavy optimization, I facepalm myself when I see a PC game run like shit on decent modern HW.

PS. Alienware lol. Who still buys that shit?

The 700 dollar pricing is obviously only the bare essentials. I'd be excited if any other company tried something like this, but when it's Alienware I smell rip-off. I still can't understand why people buy Alienware devices. It's easier and much cheaper to walk into a store and buy a pre-build PC. The only thing this device has giong for it is the form factor, that is all.

Obviously it isn't targeted at us or people who can build their own PCs

Don't forget you'd also get a Windows install + Dells warranty. From experience when a GPU + monitor died I only had to wait a day each time for the new part to be hand delivered here, beats waiting a week or more.

All this is separately available. For all Alienware products you get bare minimun componentes and anything good can double the initial price.

Consoles can't really be upgradeable or modular since people expect their day one console can still play games released six years later without any problems. Console life cycles are just too fucking long (Sony says PS3 should and will last 10 years), that's the major problem.

I'd like to see some degree of standardization in PC HW (yes I know it'll kill competition) so we'll lose the huge overhead due to layers upon layers of SW.

Companies don't really think like that, I doubt any of them do. If a company makes a console and announces it'll release an optional update two years later (let's say double the RAM), people will bitch and moan because their two year old console doesn't load levels as fast as the upgraded one. Now do that for ten years and you open a door to a possible shitstorm from your buyers.
As a console producer you can tweak your console every year and release a slim model which looks better cools better or whatever, but when those tweaks affect the gameplay, even after years, people will still bitch. I doubt any console released will be upgradeable, in a performance sense, in the near future.

I'd just use the slightly bigger Raven Z if I wanted something similar in size to that Alienware.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Mobile VCs from 2 years ago (powerful options Laughing)
8GB of ram - ok, sufficient
330W PSU?

This can't play 1080p at max settings.

But if you're going to play with gamepad, at 30fps.. sure, why not.. for 1000$
I say great for dumb but somewhat middle class peons
