its not bad. it feels like a feel good Disney movie.
I give it a 7. enjoyed it. of course acting wasn't great. lot.of deep moments. but it does have its character moments. shame that the last 30 minutes feel too American. just like vacancy. love that movie but it turned American in the end Sad

I'm interested how the Fincher's version of the latter two movies will turn out. The Swedish version suffers a bit from the lower TV production values.

Well, i thought it looked great with good production values, but Fincher's version is Fincher's version, no compromise, just what i was expecting.
I'd say the swedish film lacked ambiance or atmosphere, but this just oozes it, this is the version i'd recommend seeing for the first time.

The first original film was also made for theaters. The second and third wasn't but were re-cut after the huge success of the first.

I saw the first 2 movies and it was obvious, the 2nd one dragged and wasn't half as good as the first, the pacing was lost, it looked cheaper and just wasn't there. I've never read the books but if the story is as mediocre compared to the first book, they shouldnt bother turning it in a franchise.

I think i re-saw the swedish version in early 2011, and i thought that Fincher's version wouldn't look alot better than this, since it's a pretty good film with great direction and cinematography, but god damn, Fincher really made the whole movie 'colder', emphasizing on the coldness of the place, doing his magic with the color pallette and just some superbly set up shots.

This is his territory R rated material.

EDIT:
Just checked out the Swedish version since i remember it being alot simpler than Fincher's version .. and it is.

2012 - 3/10

It was on TV, and I said myself "why not, let's see if it's really that bad"... what a terrible decision. The movie managed to fall far short of even the modest hopes I had for it being a passable timewaster Laughing

I read the novels because I liked the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" so much and while the story of the first book is a bit better than the latter two (IMO mainly because of it's simplicity), the latter two movies suffer additionally from being shot with TV budget and being planned as 4 x 90 = 360 minutes but later re-edited to 130 + 150 = 280 minutes. The original TV versions are much better than the re-edits with better pacing and atmosphere.

It's definitely not you, there are still rare gems and enjoyable movies but the lack of new ideas and originality is really self-evident. All we get these days are sequels, sequels of sequels, dozens of (bad) comic adaptations and cheesy blockbusters for teenagers.

It is also true that the number of movies produced now is larger than before, but damn, the average quality is so bad.

I think technology is becoming cheaper and more accessible and it opens the way for independent and small budget individuals or companies to make movies... so quality takes a hit.

The opposite is true. Only the indie companies seem to be producing movies that don't compromise on creativity. Look at a production company like Fox Searchlight and their track record, for instance. You may not like all movies but they aren't producing Real Steel, Battleship or any other 2012 horrible blockbuster that companies want so they can start spewing out sequels.

The Thing 2011 - An unnecessary and ultimately boring prequel to an incredible movie. I must admit I have never seen the original(not being a horror fan makes it hard to go deep into the catalogues) but I thought Carpenter's remake was amazing. This came nowhere close.

that's what i love about the thing too, is that we don't even know if it's hostile or not
all we've seen it do is try to survive and to escape the planet, and human characters constantly try to kill it and prevent it leaving
it clearly does not want to be here, but everyone is still cheering the humans on to kill it
very much a successful portrayal of fear of the unknown

And what I really loved about Carpenter's remake and what was only touched in this was the terrific paranoia he induced in the movie. That and I preferred the traditional FX MUCH more.
